Looks like I'll be headed up to Tirerack.com to get my new tires today. (They have a distribution wharehouse in Reno) I'm going with the Khumo ECSTA MX YR rated tire.
The guy at the tire shop says that the 285's will fit fine on my 17x9 ZR1s.
I've read posts about this upsizing before nad don't remember any major probs...what say you oh technical friends?

Just answered my own question...I decided to call tirerack and ask.
On a low series tire (35-40s) the width of the whell is critical. By cheating a 1/2 inch on the tire size (Kuhmo says 9.5" min wheel for 285) in would increae the chance of catastrophic failure in my tire during hard cornering etc. by 95% (wag)
The 1/2" difference is applies pressure to the tire where it seats onthe bead. This, added to the forces encountered in high G cornering could likely unseat the tire during such an act.
Also, the additinal width would gain no performance advantage since the tire wold be slightly distorted from the narrowr wheel. The distortion would cuase the center of the tread to bow out, thus deteorating the tire's performance and wear.
BTW, the tread width on the Kuhmo 275/40/27 is 10.6 inches. The tread width on the Gooedyear Eagle F1 GS is only 9.7 inches.
