quote:The points tax was borrowed from New Jersey, but NMA (National Motorists Association) reports that "In New Jersey, they call this program 'Debtor's Prison.' Poor drivers try driving without a license, incur an even larger surcharge when they get caught, and go so far in debt to the state they can never get a driver's license again. This prevents them from holding a job, and effectively takes them out of the economy." An increase in unlicensed, unregistered, and uninsured drivers is the probable outcome. The state cynically estimates that only a little over half of the points taxes will ever be paid; the rest will be owed by persons unable to pay and who will never be able to renew their licenses.

Who's looking out for you? The part that really shocks me is where the money goes. It's not like it's illegal drug money that's been seized. But to fund the coffers with money that is dependent on how many tickets are written is very, very scary. If you haven't started contacting the state legislature on this as of yet, you might want to think about it soon.

I agree, 100%. however, I do like the $1000 fine per year for two years after a DUI/DWI. thats a law I can live with, because in Texas, in order to be convicted, you have to fail a field sobriety test on camera, or a breathalizer test, or a blood test, or any combination of the above. If your drunk and driving in texas, there is no doubt about it.
