What gives? I know there were some problems early on, but what are the 02 oil pumps quality like?

I'm performing a cam swap on my 02 motor and it has been recomended to upgrade the oil pump. The SLP pump is only $159 so if it's needed I don't have a problem spending the money, but if it's not needed I sure can use the $$$ elsewhere. [Cool]

I do not know if there is documentation of any oil pumps on '02s going south, but I can certainly verify at least one '01 WS6 in our club that had its oil pump fail at 5000 km.! My oil pump crapping out was most likely the cause of my thrown rod bearing a couple of years ago. The problem is that the pressure relief valve sticks in some of the pumps, which was identified as the cause of most of the oil pump failures. It should also be noted that there were 2 different sources that provided GM with oil pumps for our cars, with 1 of the sources supplying the suspect pumps. I know that GM was investigating this issue internally in 2000, but I am not aware of the issue being resolved before the startup of 2002 production.
Having been there, I would suggest $159 is pretty cheap insurance - especially if you consider what the alternative might be. I am running an ARE ported LS6 oil pump, which keeps my oil pressure gauge at "3/4 full" and allows me to sleep at night as well. [Smile] I believe ARE is a sponsor of this board and they are currently having a November special on them for US$139.

Hope this helps put the issue in perspective so you can make an informed decision.

Best regardSS,

Elie

Cheap insurance that might be worthwhile.

The oil pump on my 98 went without warning this past summer. I was lucky not to do any damage (that i know of) to the engine. Just lucky I caught it in time.

Are you going to do the install? Oil pump installation can make ya or break ya. If you mess something up that is.

I didn't change mine. My oil pressure on my 01 is fine. 40 hot (idle), almost 80 cold (idle). Very high. As for taking a dump, the new one could to. Save you money and put it in the top end. Same goes for the chain.

Just my 02

My current oil pressure always reads between 2/3 and 3/4 of full scale...~50-75???

Never had it drop down even in hot weather.
