This SS is killing me left and right! Just after I got all 4 rotors resurfaced under warranty, another major problem is now starting to occur!.
I'm in 5th gear and at about 1500rpm i hear a high pitch squealing or whizzing sound from the manual transmission. When I try to pull out of 5th either to go to 6th OR 4th it wont budge. FInally when I get it out of 5th it's all mush! WHAT THE HECK!?!?!
I'm not even going to take it to the dealer that usualy does the work on the car...rather...I'll take it to the dealer who I bought it from and they better fix it. Oh...and both my window motors are pretty much shot as well. This is just about the LAST STRAW.
P.S. WHen I was driving to work today I was in 5th and got it stuck in there and couldn't shift for a couple miles! Definitely not safe.

I guess some of our cars were just made better than others. I dont think Ive had a single problem that is not regular maintanence or dealer-screw up.

Lucky you. Mine is about to hit 30K. I'm hoping the dealer will fix this under warranty. Sounds like my problem might be pretty involved.

I'm with FC other than a leaking pinion seal @ 57,000 miles on a '99.
Of course GM compensated with our '02 Envoy

If your problem only happens in 5th (or 6th) gear, I would thing the problem is with the shifter fork(s) inside the tranny. This will require tranny dissassembly to fix. Could be involved.
I had a problem with my tranny with the input shaft bearing. It was loose which allowed the input shaft to wobble. It took out the pilot bearing in the flywheel and scored the input shaft pretty badly. It also made some terrible terrible screeching and rattling soounds at low speeds in firt gear.
When it first started it was intermittent and OF COURSE the dealer said there was nothing wrong with the car. So I waited until it got MUCH worse and then took the tech out in the car. Seems dealers will omly acknowledge a problem when something is good and broken....not when it is only going bad. So I made sure it was brokne when I took it in the second time.
When it started to make the noise I just let it continue to prove the point. The tech was bouncing in the seat saying enough enough. It got fixed. BTW, an input shaft cost $800+ CDN.

Well, that stinks! It might be too far away, but I would recommend Tom Oates. They rebuilt my M6 under warranty and it works fine now. They have a race team of Z-28's, that's 1 reason I went to them instead of my dealer in Downingtown (they might have been OK, it just that I didn't know). See here for details- http://www.chirpthird.com/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=000156#000000 good luck.

Thanks all. It seems like it's getting worse each day I drive the SS. Hopefully the dealer will give me a rental while it's getting fixed. Might not get around to getting it fixed until after school is done in 2 weeks. Hope my car lasts until then. I'll keep you posted. Whenever it has to do the the transmission, it's never gonna be simple.

None whatsoever. Shes about as good as they get, I think, which is one of the reasons I would rather drop a V8 into this one than buy another; shes good, and i know her history. Posts: 686 | From: Texas: Hullabaloo, Caneck! Caneck! | Registered: Aug 2003

Dan, Document what's going on by calling Customer Care (the 800 # is in your owners manual) and get it documented. They will give you a file #. I don't know if it'll help, but take it w/you when you go into the dealer for service/warranty. If nothing else, it starts a paper trail for the issues your car is experiencing.

It should be covered under the basic warranty (remove any "!CAGS" first, just to make sure they don't have THAT to scream about, even though it shouldn't have anything to do with 5th gear) unless they can prove YOU did damage to the transmission.
Follow Teri's advice and call it in, then take it to the dealer and have them look at it. A replacement transmission is around $3K or more. You want them to fix this puppy under warranty!

Waste of time....unless you plan to go after them via Lemon Law...but in your case its not the same problems over and over. Well, maybe in the case of the brakes.
The GM 800 service line stood behind the dealer in my case...they were ZERO help to me. I'll return the favor next new car I buy.
FC I have an EXTREMELY hard time believing your car has no rattles, squeaks or clunks. But if you say so...

Yikes, that kind of talk worries me. My 01ss has 35k and the warranty is done. To top itoff, it's a daily driver, unless it snows. Please no trouble...pretty please. As for the work on your car, I think you should take it to the dealer you normally go to that you know provides quality service. They shouldn't give you any trouble. Also, you should get a rental free of charge for warranty work...I did. Good luck!

I guess I'll have to wait and see what the dealer says. Sometimes (ok a lot of times) i wish I kept my 99 Z24 vert...would ahve been paid off for. Hmmm...how much can i get for a fully loaded Cavalier with the GM coupon and other rebates......

Mert same as FC out of 4 of the 4th gens I have had no rattles squeaks, gears change perfect and smooth, no clutch problems in fact out of the 4 the only one that has a single warranty done on it was the 98 SS for a rear seal and I put 74,000 miles on the 98. My 2001 SS has over 54,000 miles now and never been in the shop except for oil change and the body is very tight

My SS has posed minimal problems. I replaced the warped front rotors around 15K mi with Power Slot's. Right now there's around 20K on the clock.
I do have concerns about the diff, especially if new heads, cam and headers are added. But I wanted to go to a 3.73 or 4.10 ratio anyway, and might as well make sure the the power will go to the wheels without breaking stuff.

My '02 has been fabulous. The only warranty repair I can remember is the recent replacement of some rear suspension bushings due to an intermittent squeak that became constant. That has been IT. Great car. I have about 11,000 miles on it now. Very happy with it. I plan on remaining 'the original owner' for a long time.

Ok, today, between going to work and school and such, It's just all going down hil. NOW, when I go from 5th to 6th gear on the highway, I get a nasty grinding sound going into 6th (yes, the clutch is the whole way in). Ok...that's not the bad part. It NOW wont let me shift OUT of 6th gear!! If i push hard enough, it goes into la la land and kinda free revs. I have to wiggle the shifter around (while clutch is in) for AT LEAST 30 seconds, before I can get it into neutral. Man this could casue a serious problem. I'm calling the dealer tomorrow morning to have them look at it. Was quite scary driving...so now I have no 6th gear basically.

That sounds kinda familar. My car wouldn't come out of 3rd and 4th sometimes. I had to take off from a light in 4th one time. I didn't have the use of 5th gear right before the Skyline trip. They replaced a lot of parts, I have the list at home.
