How does the SS or Firehawk do at the track? Not talking about the the 1/4 mile, I know they perform alright on that venue. Just wondering how they perform on road courses. Lots out there right now on the STi and EVO and their track abilities. Trying to get more info on our babies on this topic...

I love driving auto-X, the only real problem is tight turns. Our cars are heavier and have a much larger turning radius than most other cars run in auto-X. Of course the suspension setup and tires make all the difference.

Like Kevin said ...we're a little handicapped on the tight courses ...but overall the handling and torque is enought to be very competitive.
The only time I've seen the AWD cars do well is when conditions limited traction. The fastest cars are almost always RWD. In our club Honda S2000's are the ones to beat.

I did Auto X with an 88 Formula back in 1990 and I went to 3 local club events this year in my SS. All I can say is find a good set of R-compound tires and some tight shocks. My car sucks on these courses cuz of my tires. I cannot get any power down whatsoever. To much rear tire spin and front end push. A regular Z28 was 3 seconds faster with good tires and a couple of suspension mods. A top driver in this area won the regional series in a 1997 SS back in 97 I believe. This year the SS is classed with S2000 and Nissan 350Z. It is moved from regular Camaro's and Firebirds. Aside from getting a schooling from WRX's and Hondas I enjoy this more then the drag track. Its way more challenging and you learn more about car control. To be competitive in these cars means you are a better driver then average. I'm hoping to take in a few Slaloms run by a local Corvette club out my way next season. They tend to open the courses up a bit. Nice to hear from you!

There used to be a Ford engineer that x-crossed F-cars and he was the national champion-SLP Engineering sold him lots of parts and provided a perfect set-up. Then his masters at Ford heard about and he was forced to switch to a Mustang!

I went to an auto-x last summer.. it was a small tight course... The cars to beat were the Miatas and vw diesel rabbits ... they were like 5 seconds better than my fastest... over all in relation to all other cars, our cars are heavy and long wheel base. I get the feeling our cars were meant for larger courses. I hd a blast, but even with the firehawks suspensions, I found it difficult to make my car perform as good as the others in there lighter, shorter wheel-based cars
In short I felt that if I could of been more consistent around the track, (read better controlling weight distribution movement) I could of gone 2-3 seconds faster, but not as fast as the other smaller cars.
I felt that with sticky tires, I could have done a little better, but like above posts said... you learn to be a better driver than average auto-x-er due to our handicap.
I have not tried something like limerock yet, but I might next summer . That's all I know !

WOW! REALLY! Hmm...now you are making a strong case to return next year. Would you happen to be considering a club vs club shootout? Looks like I may just have to get some R-compounds after all

Since we cannot get M.I.S. again next year( A Beemer Club rented it)we do not have a lot of choices around the headquarters hotel. There is also the idea of going to Milan Dragway in the morning. Posts: 5682 | From: Dearborn,Mi. | Registered: Feb 2002

All very relevant observations! ... and BTW, if you love autoXing and have an F-body, do not miss participating in the autoX events put on by the Corvette club at the Bronte GO station! It's the largest, most wide-open course I've ever done - and it is tailor-made for our powerful rear-drivers! If autoX is a focus for you, put a few $ into taking an autoX school (or 2). I feel that in terms of a return, $ spent first and foremost on the driver results in the most dividends. Having a killer setup on your car is useless unless you know how to take advantage of it. I am in awe of these guys who know how to drive properly and show up to our events in unprepared cars on street tires putting down a fraction of the power that F-bodies do and run rings the guys in powerful cars, with race rubber - simply because they know how to drive! AutoX is the ultimate equalizer in my mind, since the most important factor is the driver's ability. I would be embarrassed to publicly state the types of vehicles that have kicked my butt in autoX events!

Thanks everyone! Great feedback. I am dying to give auto-x a shot. First step will be a driving course...when extra funds are available. Camaro superfest also sounds like a great opportunity to put my developing skills to the test. By the way, my brother just got a Subey WRX and driving it got me thinking about Auto X, especially with all the hype surrounding the STi and Evo. Would be nice to surprise some of those compact car drivers.

Best regardSS,

Hey Elie I've been at the local club out here in Woodstock late this year and know what you mean. Its all imports mostly, with a few Rustangs. Most of Ontarios top drivers are here with the regional champion. Its a fun day with a good group of people. I hope to be more competitive with some better driving and tires. Seems my nic out here is wild thing!
