For all you computer peeps. I need some reccomendations on a dvd burner for my new desktop.
Basically, I may be doing a little bit of data storage, but primarily Im looking for something that will write in the correct format so that I can take my existing movie dvds and make direct-copy backups. I've been told that some dvd burners wont do it correctly, or that your copies will only play on some dvd players, so obviously Im more interested in capability than cost, but if something works right and is inexpensive, then Im not going to complain.
So, suggestions?

Plextor 708a is currently the best dual format burner out there. Check out CDRLabs for reviews, you won't find a better reviewed drive period.
You will need DVD X Copy to make copies of your DVD's. I'm assuming you know that you'll have to span multiple DVD's as we won't be seeing dual layer DVD writers until later this year and they are going to start out very, very expensive.
Good luck, I just ordered a new PSU from PC Power and Cooling tonight.

I had guessed about the dvd x copy software, but pardon my ignorance, what do you mean by spanning multiple dvds and dual layer dvd writers?
will I not be able to just pop in a dvd movie, a blank dvd, and make a copy?
BTW: Ive been eyeing the Sony DRU-530A, its in my price range, its sony, and Ive heard good things.

Commercial DVD movies are dual layered. Current DVD burning technology is singled layered. Therefore, you may have to span a DVD you are copying to multiple writeable DVD discs. It all depends on the size of the DVD you are trying to copy.
DVD X Copy does seem to make it pretty easy though. I have not used it, but reading the FAQ's on their website 321 Studios it does not seem very hard. What you will be more concerned about is if your set top DVD Player can read the media you are going to burn your movies too.

321 is currently being sued by the movie companies as it violates the oopywrite laws by allowing you to defeat the anti-piracy feature; there's some other software out there that allows you to copy a movie to your harddrive and then burn it from there. The 708 is a 8X unit and I believe the Sony is "only" a 4x unit. Both are rated #1 in there ranges. Read the reviews for all of them-there's lots of cheapie units and rebates, but speed varies considerably between brands. If you don't need it right-away, wait for the new dual layer, blue laser units that'l be out soon. Some will go from 4.7 MB to 22+ mb.

It says that the new sony is a dual layer writer, 380SS, have you been able to make direct-copies of some of your dvds with no problems?

Ive actually been following some of the news about the lawsuit against 321 studios, Jeff, its pretty interesting. The judge even commented on how it would be very hard to take advantage of fair use rights if there were no technological tools available for use. I think it will be interesting to see how it eventually turns out, im busy trying to secure a copy of dvd x copy as we speak, so that I dont have to worry about not having one if they get closed down.
I believe that the electronic frontier foundation, www.eff.org , has some cool information about the case, they stay a bit more focused on that type of stuff than slashdot, so its good for referencing stuff down the road.

Dual FORMAT not layer. You can't really go wrong with the choices you have been given. From everything I have read, the Plextor, LG, and Sony are the top three drives out there. All will backup your porn, er movies just fine. Just kidding by the way.
Now what kind of DVD ROM you getting to do disk to disk with? Don't skimp on that. You'll want a Lite On, Toshiba, or Pioneer.
