Well the week of the first of January I was driving my SS around and the low oil light came on, something that has never happened before. So I check the oil and I am a little over a quart low. This is odd because my car has never burned a drop of oil. So I put a quart of oil in and then about 80 miles and a week later I check the oil again and it is down a quart.
So I decide to take it to the dealer on the 5th. They tell me that they are suppose to do an oil consumption check on it to see how much it is using. Which means they would check the oil very 500 miles for 3000 miles. But for me, see that I leave it at home while I am at college, it would take sever months for me to get 3000 miles. So the service manager checked for service bulletins and found one on a ring redesign and oil consumption problems. So he ordered me some new rings and said they should have it done by the end of the week.
Well it was not done on Friday the 9th so I thought they had to wait on parts. So my dad went by there for me today to see what was takeing so long. And come to find out when they were putting the pistons back in the scared the cylinders, thus messing up my engine. So they had to order me a brand new LS1 witch came off the Corvette line. It came with the fuel rail covers and everything. So they will be done installing my new engine tomorrow.
I am kind of upset because I wanted to keep the engine original as long as possible but o well. There is nothing I can do about it now. So now I have the latest LS1. Does anyone know if there are any difference in stock 2001 SS LS1 and the new 2004 Corvette LS1, hp and tq wise or any other way?
I thought my fellow F-body friends would like to read my story about my new engine.

Roy I would not be upset at the new motor and if not wrong you mat get a little more horse power and for sure you got the new block which is supposed to be a little better. How many miles did you have on your 2001 my 2001 has 60,000 miles on it now and does not use oil yet and it is run hard often.

Sounds like you got the better end of the deal, just don't forget to break the new motor in. Keep the speed down & no red lines for the first 500/1000 miles at least.

I am glad I got a better engine. Mike, I only had 17,xxx on my SS. I don't think it is the LS2 because I thought that engine does not come out till the 2005 Corvette.

...One thing, it sounds like the dealer is doing the right thing, ...that's good to hear. My guess on the new motor, ...if it is indeed an LS1 from the current(C5) model Vette, ...I think that's the one rated at 350hp(?) ...you will have the obvious exhaust differences, but doesn't sound like a bad deal...

sounds like a good deal to me. my SS has also experienced low oil before too. the dealer also did that o-ring replacement, and it has not done it since. wouldn't mind a new engine though.

Nate, just so you know, o-rings are different than rings (ie piston rings). If the dealer replaced o-rings on your car, my guess is they replaced the valve stem seals, which have a kind of o-ring type of part on them. Drop by sometime and I will show the difference so you know.
Glad they got your car taken care of though. Its a bummer to lose the original engine, but at least you got a brand new, better one in its place

Yep sure do but it has been all over the country for over 2 1/2 years now and last summer I put 4,000 miles on it at the 4th in less than 2 weeks and I will be going down to the Winter Nationals in Florida the first week in Feb. and that trip will be another 2,000 by the time I get back

Agreed. I would assume that you definetly got an LS6 block, so you probably have a higher end capacity for power if you decide to throw a head/cam kit, blower, or anything like that on it. Sorry to hear about losing your old engine, but at least you got a new one that the dealer didnt have to assemble!

That's what I thought too. Hey Scott, can you tell us about anything cool coming out soon from Chevy? I know you most likly can't but there is no harm in asking.
Well I got my car back today. It now runs smoother and is just better over all than my old engine. It runs better than it did when it was new. The best part is that my base waranty runs out during next month.

Steve, the O-ring they are talkng about is one that seals the oil pick up to the pump. It was damaged on the install on a small percent of LS1 cars causing aeration of the oil. There is a tsb on it.

Hey, steve, do you know if the newer engines have the scraper seal piston rings that were created as a fix for the oil consumption problem, or do they still use the original rings, and keep the scrapers for OC rebuilds?
