A whlie back, one of the members of this board posted that he knew how to order non-standard colors from GM. I'm hoping to order a new Silverado in about a month and I'd like a color other than the "normal" ones. Can this person please respond here on the way to get a SOM Silvarado?

I think it needs to be in a fleet quantity. When we wanted to do something like this in '98, we were told there had to be at least 5 in the order and they reserved the right to fulfill the request any time they wanted (the end of the year) or cancel the order at the last minute.
It wasn't worth the hassle, but considering how companies get fleets in special colors, I don't see why it would be impossible to do.

does that mean you could have theoretically gotten a Camaro SS in Corvette Millenium Yellow in 2000?

Yes, it would. I don't see why GM does not offer this color. The salesman I talked to said I could get CalTrans orange, though. (Ugh!)

I do not know if it still works the same, but back in the dark ages(1972) I had a Toronado painted Caddy Russet Firemist. The way it was done was the dealer requested it through what was then called a local zone office and when they approved it it went to the now famous COPO people and if they also OK'd the order it was then scheduled for a build date which could be months away. The reason for this was that they would wait until they had a certain number of special paint jobs and run them down the line together. It had to be a currently used GM color and not clash with the interior trim. I seem to remember waiting 3 or 4 months for the car and it costing me a couple of hundred dollars. The paint job turned out unreal, more like a custom then OEM job. Come to think of it I guess I had a COPO Toro!

Maybe the part from GM would have been painted but not the parts from SLP! No special colors were available for SS's.

so, if i got 5 or more people to do this, i could have ordered a Yellow Camaro with one of the standard colors for the hood and spoiler?

the only 'special' paint available on the 4th gen Fcar was for B4C police units...and it had to be two colors from the existing color choices....such as black with white doors/hood, etc.
The paint shop at Ste. Therese was not set up to do special paints (other non-standard colors) and it didn't matter HOW many units someone would offer to order....with the various painted surfaces (sheetmetal, SMC, Urethane, RIM, etc) it was very important that paints were formulated so that all panels would match, regardless of the composition of the surface.
The reason CalTrans orange is available is that it is one of about 5 fleet colors (such as schoolbus yellow) that have regular requests. The Silverado IS availble in special color, however, it is limited to the fleet pallette...furthermore, there is a specific number that must be ordered. ('cause a paint system has to be taken down, cleaned...filled with new paint..etc.....not a cheap date.....)
