I agree...getting a large sum of money back means the government was using that money all year to invest in, instead of you getting a little more back each pay and investing it yourself, or doing whatever you like. So its best just to break even, or there abouts!
I work at a bank and man! you shoudl see some of the checks!! Of coruse I live work in the ghetto of Harrisburg so people dont know what 'finances' is. No wonder the majority of people today live in poverty or cant make it anywhere...but i'll stop there...

Haven't received all my paperwork yet so I will have to wait a couple more weeks before I do my return. Posts: 2841 | From: Westland, MI | Registered: Apr 2003

I am a tax accountant and I can say the refunds this year are ridiculous. Bush's tax cut really is taking into effect.
Best Regards,
Your local SSOA tax accountant.

I don't really care one way or another. I'm pretty sure I'll get a return, but at single/0 they pour the coals to me on taxes anyway. I have to fund someone else's kids' schools, something I'll never use, but that's ok. But I'd sure like to get a better return for my money than some of the dipwads they graduate. (face it, some aren't quite ready to leave school) Looking at my federal witholdings for 2003, I think I paid a government employee's base pay this past year!
As far as the "government's use of my money" well, I don't care about that either. If I got it back one paycheck at a time, I'd probably piss it away on going to the movies or eating out, etc. I'd hardly think that the few bucks in a paycheck I made a few weeks ago ( in 2003) hardly counts as the government having it "for a year." And it's not tax free, I think someone meant to say "interest free". Either way, that's just some bunko misconception. They don't hold all that "refund" the entire year. They get it a little at a time similarly like you would.
I'm already maxing out my investments, so there's no incentive to even do that. Taking the big check refund way, well, it's like having a nice surprise in the spring to take that chunk of change and buy an Eradispeed rotor set up, a new refrigerator, or something like that. Kinda like an Easter Saving Club similar to a Christmas Savings Account. Just no interest. There's no best way to go, between taking the big return or breaking even. Everyone's views may be different. But, to each their own. Whatever makes you happy. Myself, I'd rather get back a healthy check than have to pay a dime, for my own psychological well-being. But that's just my opinion.

Yeah, Bush's tax cuts might be cutting taxes, but we are looking at the highest defecit in history now. Go figure. I think the best way to even this out is to get rid of the tax CREDITS for people having kids, and make the equivalent tax BILL instead. That way those with kids pay for more of the burden that they chose to put on the system. That, and start taxing all churches........ Non-profit my @$$ .
