I bought a used instrument cluster to experiment with overlays, lighting, etc. (posessed since I saw Kevins).
Two questions: Does the PCM or the module in the cluster store the Mileage? I ask since it would be great to be able to pop out one and pop in the other as I try out results. If it is the cluster - is ther any way to set it to current mileage?
Which pin on the connector is for the instrument lights?

Rich ,the cluster stores the mileage. It is illegal to have 2 modules in the car storing the mileage. Remember I clusters were one of my components I worked on at Ford.That cluster would have to be sent out to a company like Specmo in Michigan to get the mileage set.That has to be done electronically.
I recently packed all of my F-body wiring diagrams so I cannot tell you the actual circuit location at the cluster for the instrument panel lights. GM is usually real good about keeping their wire colors the same thru the years. Try looking for a gray wire that feeds the cluster,radio, heater control when the headlight switch is in the on position.If you still need that wire...let me know and I will unpack my Camaro manuals. According to my 2002 Service manual, the pin that supplies power to the lamps is B9, with a gray wire leading up to it behind the dash. Your ground pin is B11, a black wire.
I can scan the schematic / pinout chart if you need it.

Yikes! Thats a problem! Thanks for the info. I'll have to put more thought into how to approach it. I don't mind sending it out once, but if I am experimenting over time it's not going to work.

Rich, if you do have to send it out, Eastern Electronics in Hackensack,NJ is who GM used to use in our area when I was with them. We used them for anything electronic clusters, radios, tape decks, CD's etc. They also did mechanical guages. I have not used them for quite a few years, but to the best of my knowledge they are still around. They were very nice people to deal with.

I want to replace the cluster on mine for a 200mph Granatelli. They want the original cluster, which I am not about to part with. So, I bought one from a 2000 Z28. Of course it does not show 312 miles . I was just going to live with the mileage discrepancy of the reworked cluster and put away my original. But I would love to set the older unit to my correct mileage before sending it to Granatelli for the 200 mph upfitting.

Spoke to Eastern Electronics yesterday. Here's the deal. You write a letter stating what you are doing and the mileage, copy your registration and your title, get the letter notarized, and send the cluster and the letter to them.
