You know, Greg, here in NJ the damn cops have started this new way of stopping on the side of the road... They used to pull off as far as they could, now half the time it seems they straddle the white line so their car is halfway into the right lane of traffic.
In that video you can clearly see that the cop opens his door into the traffic lane not even a second before that truck hits it. And after that, the door gets hit again by a van (if you watch closely). So how can it be the other driver's fault?
Just another case of the cops thinking they own the road and the media backing them up.

I always was told (have cop friends) that the cop is always closer to the road than the car it pulled over in front of them. Therefore, the cop car creates a little bit of a 'shield' for when he's talking by the car he pulled over. Gives him and the other car protection. Thats the reasoning behind that.

Not to mention.. It is our duty as drivers on the road to pay attention for emergency vehicles. I am dumbfounded how cars don't switch lates when a police officer has someone pulled over on the highway.
Most states have silent laws that require drivers to switch lanes, leaving the lane next to a car pulled over open while on a highway. You are also supposed to slow down as well.
Many times while I am on the highway.. I have seen even car accidents where a police officer is in the far left "fast" lane pulled off on the left shoulder.. and they are attending to an accident where a car is in the middle between the two sides of the highway.. and cars don't even slow down, let alone switch lanes when they come up on it.. where is the respect?

There was a rash of cops being killed by drunk drivers last year here in Dallas. One particular guy I know says it's the lights that makes them hit the cars by the side of the road.....looks to me like the lights would help them avoid crashes.... I never said it was the drivers fault for hitting the door. That guy may have been drunk but the cop should have known better.

The reason they HIT the cop cars is because (say it with me, all those that have been to Bragg-Smith) "Your car will always go towards what you are looking at." And since they are staring at the pretty lights, thats what they hit! Maybe driver license test should actually teach you some usefull knowledge!

I've read that in a book about motorcycle racing on a paved track. If you coming into a corner too fast and you focus on the outside edge of the track, that's where you will end up. It's hard to do, but focus on where you want the bike or car to go. This is also explained in the book "The Inner Game of Tennis".

My wife and I were just talking about this. She's a cop. One, the buffer thing is true. It also puts some engine block between the officer and the suspect for protection in the event the person decides to start shooting. However, she said its the officers responsibility to make sure he's off the road. She said the law states that if a person opens their door into traffic and it is hit, it is their fault, not the driver who hit it. Its pretty clear in the video that the door was over the white line.
Sounds like they were BOTH at fault. Officer opened the door into traffic, and the other guy was drunk.

This is the exact reason our legislature in Texas passed a law mandating the driver of any vehicle approaching Law Enforcement Officers working on any roadway, to move one traffic lane away from the Police car. To avoid any "mis-understanding" about other drivers and their responsibilitites.
The POLICE car is positioned in such a way to protect the Officer and the Citizen from idiots like the driver of the truck, and anyone else like this idiot from the post above.

POFO... Michigan had to enact a law to get people to move over or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles with lights activated. It is a BEEETCH when you have to make laws for common sense...

The lights "attract" the drunks to them. Don't ask me how, but I went to a seminar once and they told us that. I always make sure I pull the car off further than the car pulled over, and put the nose of the vehicle diagonally blocking the car in front.
The reasoning behind putting the car towards the lane of traffic also goes with being able to see the driver better.
