The fuel gage on my car (1999 SS Vert) seems to have stopped working. When the car is running or the ignition is on, the gage is always at 7/8 of a tank. It will not budge. When the car is off, it returns to "E" like always.

My guess is the fuel sender is bad, the gage, or a wire connector someplace.

Is there anything i can do or is this a shop fix??

If it is a shop fix, should i have them do anything else while they are at it?

thanks for your help

Unplug the tank connector and then turn the key back on.The gauge should peg past full. Take a 12v test light and find the wire at the tank connector that will light up the test light kinda dim. This is usually a pink wire. Cycle the key off then back on and the gauge should go to around 1/2 a tank. If is responds to that, now attach a ground wire to the same terminal.Cycle the key again and the gauge should go to empty or a bit past empty. If the gauge did move accordingly, the fuel sender float may be stuck. You could take a rubber mallet and tap on the tank to free it up. If the gauge did not respond at all with all of the above, try to locate the rear harness connector under the I.P. and perform the test there. Now if the gauge responds normal, look for an open circuit between the sender and the I.P. connector.
