Well, now that everyone knows my wife and I are relocating down there to the Raleigh area, I have a few inspection and license questions:
1. I have read that people moving there from another state have to take a written test to get a license there as well as the eye exam. I understand the eye exam but a written test too? Any insight?
2. How strict are the inspections? I know they are yearly. I have 20% window tint on all three of my vehicles and I'm pretty sure that will have to come off.
3. Windshield banners I have read are illegal. I have one on my Firehawk and it has been on there since I bought it - you can't even see it from inside the car - will it have to come off too?
3. Does NC require front tags?
Thanks in advance for all the help!! We are really excited about coming down there this summer!! We are actually going to be there this Fri - Sun looking at the area and meeting with a realtor!
1. Yes, you have to take a written exam and an eye test ......... sorry broh, but that way they can charge you extra ......... at least it's not like Washington state .......... when we moved there from Arizona in '88, they made us take the driving portion of the test also
2. Don't know about the window tint, but the safety inspection and emissions test seems pretty normal
3. Windshield banners are not illegal, both our SS's have one and no one has ever questioned it
4. NC does not require front tags

You da man! Thanks bro! We are so looking forward to it! The written test sounds like a blast!! Hmm, I hope I can remember my right from my left I appreciate your input and will not remove my banner from the Firehawk! Houses in our neighborhood are selling in just days so it's looking good for us. Unfortunately Jess won't be done school until late May so we have to wait until then to put the house up. She's upt to her eyeballs in school work and that's out #1 priority right now is for her to get that degree! Thanks again and it's not coming soon enough for sure!!
1) Written test and eye exam. Whenever you renew your license you have to take an eye exam.
2) There is a window tint limit and it is checked at the inspection station, but I don't know what it is as I don't have my windows tinted.
3) Banners no problems - the local f-body club has a banner that some of guys are using.
4) No front tags
OBD-2 cars have their emissions checked by plugging into the OBD-2 port. They also do a visual check, looking for cats, air pump, etc. OBD-1 cars are sniff. Inspections stations are not state run, but are private businesses, dealerships, local garages, oil change places, etc. Some are pretty strict on the visual and some are a little less strict. Doesn't take long to learn which ones to go to and which ones to avoid.

Once we get a house I'll let you guys know and maybe you could recommend a good place to go for inspections! I just want courteous service. I doubt I will have any problems with any of my vehicles passing except for the window tint which I know is 20%. I'll probably have check it anyway - I noticed the legal limit is 35% so I know mine is not legal but I'll see what they say anyway! I printed out the drivers manual to look over. Got a bet with the wife as to who gets a better grade - just some friendly competition amongst spouses Might as well make a game out of it since we have to do it anyway

Bruce you said your tint was 20% if so you will be legal and lots of cars here have much much more than that and seem to get away with it. I have always had a wide banner on top of my windshield so thats ok and you will like not having to have a front tag and for custom tags you get up 8 letters

The NC law states 35% on the window tint, but since there is room for error in testing equipment, tint will pass down to 32%.
As far as your windshield banner, you shouldnt have any problems. There is a law for windshield tinting.......the tint can extend from the roof line no more than 6 inches. Windshield banners pretty much all fit within those given 6 inches, but I doubt you will catch any grief.
Oh, and here is another early welcome to NC. Glad to see another Hawk, this time a little closer to me. Hopefully you are into the show thing, and maybe even some fun cruising and at the dragstrip......lots of action around here in the car world. You are going to be happy, at least with that!!

BrucK, as long as you're not throwing any codes, you'll be OK with the OBDII testing. I've got a friend at a dealership that would mark everything else off, but you gotta plug into the state's machine for the OBD testing.

Thanks Darren and I am into the car show thing and the race thing - I've done both with the Hawk. I used to have Hendrick SS #31 a few years ago - sold that to buy a vette (mistake) then traded the vette on the Hawk - once we get settled I will be looking for some things to do - the window tint I figure will have to come off - it's 20% but I'll leave it on and see what happens. We are looking forward to it and it's not soon enough! Thanks and I will be in touch for sure!

Thanks bro! I've got no problems with codes - car is still stock except for lots of suspension stuff, y-pipe and loudmouth so no problems there - when I get down there I'll give you a hollar and you can tell me where your buddy works and I'll take all three of the vehicles there for inspection - if I can get away with the window tint that would be most excellent - that stuff was expensive No problems passing any of the other two either - nothing done to them except the volant on the truck, 20% tint, k&n cold air and magnaflow catback on the mustang and 20% on that too - thanks for all the insight - looking forward to hangin out with you guys and commin south!!

It is "I" I remember you too - weren't too many of those Hendrick's around - sweet cars indeed and I miss mine so I can imagine how you feel I love my Hawk, but there was just something about that Hendrick
