I'm getting emails from someone inquiring as to whether I think this is a real SS or not. Here's the link.
There evidently is no cowl tag (run far away!) or Protect-O-Plate, but they think it's a real SS. I don't see any indication that it is, because badges and stripes are cheap to add and fake a car.
It has a 427 in it, and a Cowl Induction hood (no SS hood). It's extremely overpriced in my opinion for a modified car with no documentation or proof of anything. The VIN decodes as a V8 coupe with standard interior, built in VanNuys. I wonder what the hidden VIN reads?
I think it's just a coupe that someone has added a 427 and Cowl Induction hood and striped/badged as an SS.
What other things would you look for on this car that might indicate whether it's a real SS or not?

Wrong hood for a 1968 SS,should of had a flat type hood with the rectangular lovers and GM did not sell these with a 427,maybe a 396. I can't tell in the pictures if the rear tail panel is satin black like GM would have done for a big block car. Gauges appear to be non stock in the console.Can't tell if there is a 12 bolt rear end or not.The fender "SS" emblems sem like they are in the wrong location and the cross flags look like they were for a Chevelle or Impala. Seems way too high priced.

LOL--could they have gotten that any higher off the ground?
On a '68, shouldn't the "SS" script be behind the wheel, not in front of it like this one? I think the engine designation goes on the front of the fender. That would be hard to screw up if it were real, because the emblems were held on by speed nuts with holes through the sheetmetal.
For all you know, that could be a 454 out of a school bus under that incredibly bad looking hood.

By the pic this car is not a big block car that is for sure. That is the real problem with 68s cowl tag doesnt identify SS, Z, etc. It may have a 12 bolt but that still doesnt mean it is a SS. Plus the alt. is on the pass. side and not the correct driver side. There is no definite way to be sure if this car is a true SS without any paper work. But I am 99.9% sure that it is not a big block car. If I had to guess I would say this car started life as a 327 powerglide car. At the most it could have been a 350 SS car but not likely. Oh and Tuxedo Black big blocks did not receive satin black tail panel.

Wrong hood... Wrong stripe...too squared off at the bend Wrong emblems and locations... Wrong springs! Is it 4wd?!? Seat buns are worn out.... Console guages are wrong and aftermarket... Radio is aftermarket... Steering wheel is wrong.... It's really ratty under the hood for a car that has had 'that much money spent on the restoration'.... Engine could be any big block....wrong for the car too...
It's a low optioned street machine with good paint.....$12k - $15k tops.....

You're right, the SS should be behind the wheel and the engine size on the front of the fender. At least that's how my 68 SS is and I purchased it in July of 68.
This was orginally a small block car, look at the heater core box, don't it look like a small block heater box not that it has anything to do with the car being a SS as there were plenty of 350 SSs.
As to height, that's a common problem in buying replacement springs for a 1st gen. Most (not all) of the replacement stock height springs make the car set high, some higher then others but most set high.

it has 66/7 style Big block flags, 69 cowl induction hood, (BTW, that is the right steering wheel for a 68 with "special" interior, just so you know!), autometer gauges on console, small block heater case, alternator on wrong side, 4 wheel drive, and UGLY underhood. Not worth anything close to that amount, IMO

The valve covers are not right for a 396 or 402 or 427

As we all know, ...'68's are the toughest to 'decode'. All I can confirm from the info I see is: It was an 8 cylinder '68 coupe, original color was Butternut yellow, W/ a BLACK vinyl top (Y-2), and it DID have (Custom) Black Houndstooth interior (749). It was built in LA (LOS) the 4th week of Sept (09D).
Observations: - SS emblems should be on the lower portion of the front fender behind the wheel opening, under "Camaro". - The engine designation would have been on the forward portion of the fenders, NOT SS emblems. - Flags were for '67, ...not '68, etc. - It's a 4WD, way! too high - hood not available for '68 - Belt Chrome, ...I believe is is part of the 'appearance group' and should also have wheel opening chrome. (roof drip chrome I think was there). - Deluxe Steering wheel IS correct, since this car was a deluxe car. Is that an "SS" emblem on the steering wheel? (I don't think so...) - And what about that "SS" gascap, ...another 'nope'. - Also notice the grab handle above the glove box, ...deluxe, ...that is correct -...SO if the car was deluxe, ...well you know the door panels, seats, etc, ...not correct. - Gauges are aftermarket as well as the radio. - Now, ...don't you just love the heater box. They actually 'modified' a small block box for the 427 (which we know is an add on too). They could have at least put a BB heater box in. -The stripes are WRONG too, ...the car was built in the 4th week of Sept, ...it should have received the regular BumbleBee stripe (in Black for it's original color). The "revised" stripe didn't come out until after Jan. '68.
...I suppose we could go on, but for what?, ...the car's a fake (we all know that).
I'd be interested to confirm it has a 12-bolt (SS) multileaf rear, ...that has a DATE CODE in the 4th week of Sept. '68. IF (what a stretch) it did, ...there are a some other details to see if it were a SB or BB SS (ie. fuel lines, frame mounts).
Someone is trying to sell of a 'street' machine that (like was mentioned above) is probably worth 15K at best. ...and to say it was "Restored", ........unreal
