We were staged perfectly at the red light in the middle of town. This kid in a 90s GT starts creeping on the line like he's playing with the tree. The light goes green, I squirt a little and pull ahead. I get to the speed limit (a little over) and settle in. The kid blows by me still accellerating, I look over at my eight year old daughter and laugh. Down the road aways the kid slows down, now the speed limit is 65, hes going about 50-55 I start to come up behind on the passenger side (again, going barely over the posted limit) and then he takes off...I'm not sure, but I think tonight on some mustang board there's a kid saying he waxed an SS [Eek!]

He got so excited he barely shut down in time to stop behind the traffic at the red light ahead of us. [Razz] I drove by him as I made my right turn to the house and he was stopped with his bumper a few inches behind the car ahead of him.

Why do idiots try and race me, when I'm driving in the middle of town carrying my children in the car with me? [Roll Eyes]

Trying to show off especially when there is someone else as a passenger in either car. Its not just youth that want to race. I had a Mustang GT slow down next to me on a freeway one day. He goosed it a little and I just laughed at him. Then he cut in front of me to get to the exit ramp which I was going to take and he was watching me in his rearview mirror. I just mouthed to him that he wouldn't stand a chance and laughed. He then took off. I refuse to race to anyone knowing I almost flipped a car over once which totally cured me of it.

You toasted him off the line, anything after you slowed down doesn't count, screw him! [Razz] I dusted a jetta so bad with my old caprice wagon it wasn't funny, a mile later he goes screaming by at over a hundred in a 40 zone... meh...

Well, I can't say I'm innocent of doing that as a younger man, but I'm glad we know how to handle a situation like that. Maybe we need to get a bumper sticker or something like it saying, "Yeah, it's fast, but save it for the track." (But with more wit!)

Drag Racing is lots of fun, but not on the street. Realizing that it can happen to you, and the ones you love, should make us all a little more wise!! Take a look at BillyGraham.com website, look at all the torn up F-Bodies, some are there because of street racing...makes you sick to look at it: We have been there in person..makes you even sicker..all those beautiful cars...GONE

Maybe, just maybe, because you might have given him reason to think that you actually WERE prepared to get involved in a street race.
Before I go any further, I would like to congratulate you on NOT taking it any further while on the street.
I'd like to relate an incident however, that happened to me, and you are more than welcome to draw your own conclusions...
I was sitting at a light when the guy next to me started to rev his motor. It sure seemed like an invitation to race. As if to answer, I revved the engine back at him. Shirley was riding shotgun and expressed a "vigorous" concern that I might want to think twice about getting involved in a race with this guy. I just laughed at the suggestion and assured her that there was no way I was gonna do that - that I was just teasing this sucker.
The light turns green and this guy leaves rubber while taking off like a bat outta hell. I just sat there and waited before starting my leisurely roll thru the intersection. I'm the hero for not racing - right? WRONG!!
What if this guy after launching really hard, (because he interpreted my revving the engine back at him as an answer to his challenge) had been involved in an an accident, and(God forbid) killed or injured someone because I simply had revved my motor at him in mock response?
Perhaps he would have proceeded thru the intersection normally had I not "answered his challenge" by revving my engine. Who's to know?
The bottom line as far as I'm concerned, is that I could have ended up having to live with shouldering at least some of the responsibility if an accident/injury had resulted from my actions.
There is an organization called "StreetsmartsUSA.org" http://www.streetsmartsusa.org/ that defines street racing as "Two or more vehicles engaged in a contest of speed, acceleration, and/or
road handling on a public roadway that is not, at the time of the contest,
dedicated for such actions by local, state, or federal authorities."
I keep meaning to suggest to them that this definition could also apply to a single vehicle. You don't necessarily need a second car beside you to race on the street.
Please excuse my getting on a soapbox, but I do feel VERY strongly about this. My hope is that I have been sufficiently provocative so that perhaps one person might refrain from doing what I did. Who knows... maybe one life might be saved as a result - and then again, maybe not. But isn't it worth the effort to at least take a shot? What could it hurt?

best regardSS,

Elie

Many say it's "youth and testosterone" that drives people to street race. I'm 20, so I'd say I'm still pretty youthful. I definitely feel the urges to light 'em up on the street due to testosterone. But, I refrain from street racing. The only time I have street raced was a couple years ago in the wee hours of the morning on an empty road, taking it to 70 in a 45 against a turbo Eclipse. After that, I felt bad enough about it to refrain from doing it again, so far. (Okay, well there was once before that a fox-body Mustang turned left into the oncoming lane of a road that I was also turning on, and I gunned it and kept him from passing...some might call that racing)

I don't believe that someone who simply revs at a redlight, or even takes off a bit hard but doesn't speed should be held responsible in a "street race" situation. Some people rev to say hello, or to give sort of a thumbs up to the other driver. And I'm sure we all take off a bit hard from red lights from time to time...I don't consider that racing.

Anyway, it seems to always be odd people that try to race me. For example, the other night I had a Ford Explorer just egging me on. I finally laughed where the driver could see me, and he left me alone.

Perhaps I need to work on my writing skills? Using a little bit of creative license I was attempting to draw the reader in, making him see the traffic light in his mind, seeing the cars edging up to the line. OK, I did that part well I guess?

Well nobody revved at least I didn't hear the mighty mustang roar [Roll Eyes] I rolled out in first to about 30mph crisply, I popped it into 2nd and maintained 30mph. It was than Mustang boy passed me and I let him go by without much of a thought. I don't think he beleived I was still on it, but he couldn't stand to look at me unless it was through his rear view mirror, no matter what the speed limit sign said. [Eek!]

Down the road, he waited for me. I caught up, only because the speed limit (+ or - [Big Grin] ) allowed me to. When I got close, he bolted and took off...I think this time he was trying to race me, but I just maintained my speed, I think I was actually on the cruise control at this time.

Anyway, sorry if that was not as philanthropic as some would expect...I just thought it was a funny story.

SSHEETS,
I understand exactly where you are coming from on this and maybe it's me who needs to polish up the writing skills. Your story caused me to recall the incident I described simply because of the fact that both of us chose specifically to not race, yet the other person involved went ahead and did so anyway. I'm not suggesting either, that you ought to shoulder any of the responsibility for Mustang Boy's behaviour - it's quite likely that he would have behaved exactly the same way, no matter what you did (or didn't do). I decided to take advantage of the opportunity you presented to point out that it doesn't necessarily take 2 people to race. In my case, I felt some responsibility for egging the other guy on, as there was eye contact between us and there wasn't any doubt in my mind about the message that I was sending to him. After my wife pointed out to me what could have happened, I certainly realized that I had made an error in judgement without even realizing it. By relating the story, my aim was to perhaps cause somebody else to think twice so as to avoid being involved in a similar situation.
After re-reading my post, I can see where one might get the impression that I was criticizing your actions. In no way was I attempting to do this and if that was the impression I gave, then I apologize. I hope this post clarifies the point that I was attempting to make in the first place!

Best regardSS,

Elie

Perhaps this might help... I don't street race, and I don't care what other drivers think of me or whether they beleive my car is slow or fast. Who are those idiots? What effect do they have on my life? Why do I need to prove how fast or slow my car is? I can tell you this... they can have a tremendous effect on our lives if we decide to get sucked in to their game. Maybe an effect on our death, as well.

At least it was a mustang, how about the morons in mini vans with kids that try the same thing! The other day I took a ride and a man with kids pulled next to me at a light reved his engine and took off so fast I just took my time at next light I looked at him shook my head, then he starts yelling swearing and all I made aturn and took off I thought you have a car full of kids and you want to start something! Without kids maybe a problem for him!
