Saturday was my very 1st attempt at driving an autocross course. I have to say, it was fun. The 1st time I went out I was way too hot in the corners and killed a few cones. I slowed up a bit and was actually able to run a pretty decent 12.84 seconds with my Sonoma with the ZQ8 Performance ride and handling suspension. The truck needed more air in the front tires because they were rolling down about 1" on the sidewall. I did drive it to the ragged edge though. The second time I went back out I was much better even with the low tire pressure.I can't wait until next month to do this again!
My son was real fast with his 1994 S-10 SS. Another EMCC member loaned his tires and wheels off his 3rd Gen Camaro for the autocross. Good thing he was not there to see his tires go up in smoke bigtime! Posts: 5682 | From: Dearborn,Mi. | Registered: Feb 2002

Greg, autocross is a TON of fun... the last time I raced was quite a few years ago at the season ender at the GM proving grounds... I have a beretta set up with koni's and all the goodies.. just not enough time to go anymore. Driving a RWD vehicle would be a lot of fun as you can kick the back out.

You should use the SS! I did, it's a blast!
Used to race "C" Sedan with a Honda Civic, it was fun and won the class for the year. It sure is different with the SS though.

Were you not running your SS?? My first time back on a course last year I was way out of control they nearly gave me the nik name "wild thing" But then I simmered down. Its not a Horsepower contest for sure and autoX can become very addicting! The Camaros sure look and sound good out on these things but if the courses are tight then its very tough to be competitive. Anyone going to Superfest this year? They are having an AutoX. Should be a blast with all Camaros!

Not this time. Without the STB and the SFC's I did not feel that I would be doing the car any good since it is a convertible. The last think I need it a door that does not shut good or a body panel that now has a bad misalignment. Posts: 5682 | From: Dearborn,Mi. | Registered: Feb 2002

Boy you can say that again about tight courses. I went to an AX a few years ago that was all imports. They set the course up real tight. I complained to the organizer that it was too tight and that I would not even be able to get my Firebird around some of the corners. They ignored me!!
Another competitor who understood what I was saying said I should just go out and take out as many cones as I could. So.......
I got five cones on that first run. They were going in all directions.
THAT got the organizer's attention. They changed the course for the second and remaing runs. Posts: 383 | From: Oakville, Ontario Canada | Registered: Jan 2003

Tire pressure is key. Make sure you take a tank with you and a good guage so you can make adjustments between laps. A white tire marker is critical. Mark the edge of the tire from the side to the tread surface, this way you can see how much roll you're getting in the corners. You can also loosen up the handling by increasing rear tire pressure.
Have fun and get some SFCs and an STB do you can take the SS

Hey Bill! Sounds like you were at a WOSCA autoX up here! You live in Oakville eh! Next Sunday the Competion Corvette club is hosting a slalom at the Bronte GO station. See if you can make it out, would be nice to meet you. Even if you can't run, a few of us are bringing some Fbodies to run and I can't wait to see the Vettes! . I've been told that their courses are about 1km long!

Yeah, I was at a WOSCA regional a few years back. The event I was referring to was in Peterborough though.
Yes, I live (sort of) in Oakville. That is where my permanent address is. I actually work in Gatineau (old Hull), live in Ottawa and come back to Oakville about every second week-end. (Long story).
I am planning to come back this weekend so I will drop by the Bronte GO station. It is about all of five minutes from my house.
See you there. BTW, I has a red orange metallic Trans AM. See you there.
