Yesterday I went to a friends house to do some yard work for them....When I got to the backyard I found a rotti in a small kennel and the dog was nothing but skin and bones. Didn't seem to be sick or anythig else. The dog looked so sad you could see it in her eyes..

What should I do, call the SPCA and report this or leave it alone. If the dog dies then I would feel the blame because I didn't report this. [Confused]

Greg to tell you the truth i don't think it will help. Last year they had a dog die because he got wraped up in the chain. Didn't really seem to bother them that much.

I think I'd wait for a few days and then call ASPCA.....you don't want to be the target of animosity.....but if they've already let a dog die, the only way this is going to stop is to let the authorities go after them..........

Pets can't help themselves - they are totally dependant on their owners.

Call the SPCA. You'll be glad you did.

This kind of thing breaks my heart.

Read this American Humane link.

The dog may have become more of a burden than they were willing to put out for it and perhaps they're neglecting it out of embarassment, or ingorance on how to ask for help, or can't admit they can't handle it. So what if they get angry at you because you reported the neglect. They should understand that you did it because you care.

Kids and animals are helpless and dependent on us. It's up to responsible adults to care enough to protect them. When it comes to life/safety issues, they need to be acted upon immediately. It could save a life.

Call the local Animal Control authority or Humane Society and explain what you saw. Most jurisdictions allow for anonymous reports.
Read this link on how to report it.

The perception of the friend being "betrayed" by you (as a result of his own actions) is nothing compared to the guilt you'll feel if this dog dies while you did nothing, yet knew of it.

According to Accomack County's website, Animal Control's phone number is (757) 824-5666 or (757) 787-1131. They will know the best way to handle the situation. Call them today.

Judging by their past behavior, I'd report it to the SPCA. Is there any way that the report be anonymous, or does the owner HAVE to know who reported it?

I would have to say report it, but waiting a couple days may be best as to remain anonomous...I rescued this rotti pictured as my avatar(Buddy), I got him @ 6 months old and he's over 3 yrs now, such a great companion.

I just did some shirts for new england rottwieler rescue, if you wanted I could pass this info onto them and they would know who to contact in the area...email me if you want.

Don't wait. An anonymous report can be placed whether it's today or next week. You should be able to stand up for what's right in saving the dog, so screw him if he's a little miffed if he finds out you reported the neglect.

The difference of a few days could mean death for that animal. If you haven't called yet, think about that dog every time you eat something today, tomorrow, the next day, etc. He may not be getting a meal like you are. Every day you wait, that dog may be starving more. That is contributing to the problem by not acting on what you know is the right thing to do.
