Don't get me wrong here, 'cuz I'm not trying to rain on anybody's parade, but coincidentally enough, I found out just today that I have been the victim of dyno manipulation. Please do not think for a second that I'm suggesting that this has happened to you - I will relate my experience and thoughts... and you can deal with the information as you see fit. I'm sure you are asking - how can dyno readings be manipulated/inflated? Well, let me tell you... The dyno has a sensor that detects air temp as part of the equation to correct HP levels back to SAE standard temps at sea level. If the ambient temps are very high, the calculation will be skewed and the calculation will correct the numbers upwards. It turns out that my car was dyno'ed at an ambient temp reading of 168*! No car would even run in 168 deg ambient temps, but the dyno doesn't know that and since higher temps result in lower air density, the dyno will always correct the numbers upwards. The correction factor can be as much as 100 HP or as low as 30 HP at those temps. When you put a heater next to the air sensor it will simply record what it sees - and it seems that this is what has been done. I'm sure that a few people on this board might remember my post from a few weeks back stating that I had gained in the area of 20 RWHP and approx. 30 ft-lbs. of torque from a simple computer tune. The bottom line is that on a Dynojet, the temp readings are available to be read with a mouse click, although these readings are not automatically printed on the graph. With any dyno that I have done in the future, I will ask the operator to show me the temp readouts from the sensor at the time of the dyno. Addendum: My engine builder is, and will continue to be Agostino Racing Engines in Pickering, Ont. Without going into detail, there have been monumental changes at ARE over the last few weeks. The bottom line is that Nick Agostino is contolling the reins once again, after a 2 year absence. IMHO, nobody takes more pride in the work turned out by the shop that has his name on the shingle, and I can tell you that this man is doing what is necessary and bending over backwards beyond belief to keep his customers happy and satisfied. With the change in management and Nick being back at the helm, my support for ARE is absolutely unwavering.

I know exactly what your saying. I have known OTHER shops to do those things. I was there for the dyno and it was 110% Legit!! No heaters nothing. We didn't need to lie about my dyno numbers cause they are 100% accurate. Mikey is a stand up guy and a great businessman and doesn't believe in hyping up the numbers. Your car is what it is. All I can say is that I was there to witness it for myself and I know for a fact that everything was done right. We even looked at the temp. and it was perfect. That is why we posted the corrected and uncorrected stats, that shows that there was NO tampering! But I have known shops to "sand bag" cars before to get higher dyno #'s. I wanted to know exactly what my car had, this is a project car. I didn't do it to please anyone else. The #'s are for us and it wasn't important to me to have the biggest #'s in anyone else's eyes. Hope this clears up a few things..

I'll confirm (though I know Ellie is not suggesting)that the shop, the dyno and especially Mikey are legit! Posts: 3403 | From: Woodcliff Lake, NJ, USA | Registered: Dec 2000

This is Mikey posting under Sues name (because I'm too lazy to register...lol). Since this is not my dyno but an independant shop, all numbers are what they are. The owner of the shop was present for the session (Joe Aquilante, 610-482-0141, Phoenix Performance). Was I shocked at the number? Maybe a little, but when you build 1000 hp 355 small Chevs for a living, this was just another one. There were no dyno tricks although, I too know of other shops that play this game. Probably the sames ones that you do. Anytype of heat on the weather station will skew the correction. This is why we posted the uncorrected number as well so you can see that the correction was lower. Also, we made this power with all the belts attached, through the Y pipe and through the exhaust. No one else can say that.

Understood, and I wasn't suggesting either that you did alter the readings... as you pointed out very clearly both the corrected and uncorrected readings in the original post. My intent was only to relate my experience to others so that they might be made aware of this practice. I certainly was unaware of this - I hope my post might save others some disappointment in the future.

Elie, we have had customer's come to us and when we dynoed them it was up to as much as 30HP less than before. So we have had this problem in the past with other shops doing this and then we get their cars and they think that we are doing something wrong..LOL It happens more often than it should! OH I also want to go on record and vouch for what Susan says about Mike, He is a stand up guy and has the honesty and integrity to match it. Mike did wonders on Seth's car (I wish Seth would have gone to Mike for his motor stuff).

Susan, Congrats!! I know you will know what to do with all that power. For all of you who don't know her, she is one "bad gal" with an LS1 teamed up with her right foot. LOL
Mike, Great job (as usual) I'm happy that I live 30 minutes away from you. Of course, my wallet is beginning to feel lighter. jk
See you both soon.

No Nitrous!!! I think it is WAY more impressive to be able to do it on motor! I think nitrous is the easy way to get there IMO..
