So, I followed Bob and others. Just finished installing a 200 mph, white faced, TA bezel'd, Xeon bulbed, guage cluster...whew. pics below.
Many thanks to those who went first and were kind enough to share their experience. My install was a snap. I, however, did not use the original cluster (every mod undo-able). I used a cluster from a 2001 Z28 with 22K miles. So when I fired her up, the digital odometer flashed to life with a bright red 22,000 mile how-do-you-do.
One question for those that have gone before me and one point of topic.
Q. I have a Air Bag sensor light now lit on the panel. Did this happen to anyone else?
P. Begs the question. How many scum bags (used car salesmen) do this change over to REDUCE mileage? Or, now that I have my original 414 mile cluster put away, does that give me free license to drive the car wherever and somewhere in the future return the cluster and represent the car as a 400 mile car? Anyway, you all get the idea. Love to hear opinions.
Here are the pics.

Well, it answers a question that I have had for awhile.
The mileage is evidently stored in the circuitry of the instrument cluster. There must therefore be a way to progam in a new mileage, or else warranty instrument cluster installations would start at zero mileage, regardless of how old the car was.
Ergo, your local dealership should be able to help you re-program the new cluster (which is ideally what you would want to do, if you intend to be honest about it, which is what i would reccomend).

Good comments. BTW, those that know me, know I am a mileage freak. I have made record of the starting (replacement cluster) to add to my original 400 miles if/when I return the car back to original. But, still, if it is this easy, what has stopped countless others from falsely representing the mileage on a clean fbod?

Looks awesome Glenn, I really like the LE logo on it! The air bag light did not come on in my case, but the Xenon bulbs are so bright maybe they are casting light on the transparent letters and shining through? Anyway you can have the Odometer adjusted to your correct mileage by a speedo shop. A good one in my area is Specmo, Specmo they charge around $100 and you could provide your original cluster for documentation of the original mileage. Any further help you need give me a shout blkss02@comcast.net

Bob, Thanks for your response. Ralph actually figured out what I did wrong. I forgot to disconnect the battery. DOH !! So...when I lowered the steering wheel assembly, I must have triggered an air bag alert. I'm probably lucky that it didn't deploy!!
Also, thanks for the info on the mileage correction. I am definitely going to check that out.
really suprised by the lack of conversation on the mileage authenticity subject. Maybe, because it is Mother's Day weekend and all.
Regards, Glenn

Glenn, it looks great. The airbag would not have deployed. Did the light go off after disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it?

Greg, I did not disconnect the battery. I was going to have a tech use LS1 edit to delete the error message. Do you think, just "rebooting" the computer would do the trick?

I would give it a try by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. Posts: 5682 | From: Dearborn,Mi. | Registered: Feb 2002

Hey Glenn!! Lookin nice!! Long time....how many miles on the 30th??
Anyways...i'd do something to get the mileage right on the 22k cluster, or, keep track of haow many miles you put on it, and if you ever put the original one back in, reprogram that one then. Otherwise, i'd think a dealer shuodl be able to reprogram the miles, unless its considered illegal.

Glenn, The gauges (and car of course) look great. (I do love the chrome 10-spokes on the 35th too). As for the mileage 'authenticity' issue, it is an 'easy' way to lower it simply by swapping out the cluster. I'm sure it's already been done (and of course falsely represented). It raises a thought that I've had since I changed my gauge FACE(and T/A bezel). I still have the original cluster, so there aren't any mileage issues, HOWEVER did you notice the "seal" (that needed to be 'cut') to 'open' the cluster (to swap the face)??? This seal is there so that you know if the cluster was "tampered" with. I don't recall the exact words on the seal, ...but if I remember correctly it had something about "VOID" (as in warranty) if removed...

I don't know ... seems like you might be doing something illegal with that to me. Might want to look into that. I could be wrong.

It's only illegal to misrepresent. If you make disclosure as to the actual mileage, regardless of what the odometer says, nothing is illegal.
Clusters do need to replaced for legitimate reasons from time to time.

(1) The cumulative mileage registered on the odometer, which figure reflects the actual mileage the vehicle has traveled.
(2) If the transferor knows that the odometer reading differs from the number of miles the vehicle has actually traveled, and that the difference is greater than that caused by odometer calibration error, a statement that the actual vehicle mileage is unknown.
Would number two mean that he has to put mielage unknown on his disclosure? This seems like an unwanted stigma to attach to such a nice car.
BTW, I don't know nothin, and I'm not being critical. Just trying to help. I'll sit down now. Posts: 142 | From: Kansas City | Registered: Oct 2002

Kevin, My original cluster still has the 2 plastic strips intact. They don't have any writing on them, however. But there is a blue ink line under the tape. It might show tampering if one were to lift the tape and reset. Thanks for the compliments. You rock!
Dan, Been too long. As I mentioned earlier, I have documented photos of the replacement cluster mileage after installation. Also using the trip odometer to track new mileage. If/when I ever put the original back in, I'll have the mileage corrected or at least disclose the info. It would be nice, however to have this cluster match the original. So, I still would like to explore a "reset".

Please don't!! This is exactly the conversation that I was looking to envoke. Thanks for info, I was concerned about that very same liability.

This is true....I once had a truck that I traded in and the milage would Skip higher. It had only several hundred extra at most,I cought it in time. The dealer said to not say anything because once the title says "Unknown" it is left to interpatation. Is it "Off" by only a few OR is it off by a few "Thousand"

Hypothetically, if you had a high mileage ODO and got in a accident, I bet the insurance would pay the lower figure of the higher miles without some notory papers.

Looks Good Glenn, somehow, I don't think you'll be changing it back....So, I'd have the speedo reset to the original miles.... Just my thoughts,
