I am going to school next fall in AZ. How hard is it to transfer my car to a different state? Do I need an address, or can the school one count. When I do this, does that meen that all the smog, or lack of, checking does not apply. I live in Ca. Has anyone done this before?

On campus a lot of people have the cars dropped off to where they are staying. From what I see the plates and all are left to the home address.You would have to check with the carier to make arangements.
In Ann Arbor the students are considered residents as they have the right to vote in any election. This Pisses the locals off because they have been trying to pass a city income tax for 15 years and cant. This would affect the students also.
Quick thought Why would you want to transfer the car for school and then have to transfer it back when you go back home. I think all you have to do is let the insurance know of your change in tempory residence.

I think the next to last statement would apply to your situation. Or maybe if you can get a "friend" that lives there to hook you up with a permanent address if you wish to change. Don't know why you would, but it would be an option.
Straight from the Arizona DOT website:

Work in Arizona (other than for seasonal agricultural work)
Place children in school without paying the tuition rate of a nonresident
Have a business with an office in Arizona, and that bases and operates vehicles in this state
Obtain a state license or pay school tuition fees at the same rate as an Arizona resident
Have a business that operates vehicles to transport goods or passengers within Arizona
Remain in Arizona for a total of 7 months or more during any calendar year, regardless of your permanent residence
An "out-of-state student" enrolled with 7 or more semester hours is not considered a resident, even if employed.
Military personnel based in Arizona who qualify for exemption under the Soldiers and Sailors Relief Act are not considered Arizona residents

My son has had his car with him at school for the last 3 years, but it remains registered here at home. As long as he is a full time student he can stay on our auto policy. Much much cheaper.

I probally will not return to california right away, as i will be teaching kids out there. But, am not going to get a house right away either. I am trying to do this for a few reasons. One is so I dont get hassled by the local cops. Two is so I dont have to deal with the cops in california for stupid rules here (read needing front plate) Three is to get around some smog rules that california has.

I didn't have to register my car in MD when I was going to college. I DID have to register the vehicle and MD Tags but I did have to get an out of state permit sticker. BUT once I got out of college (I stayed in MD) I had to get MD tags.
