Interesting trivia!
Hmmm I love it... and use it all the time. I make it a point to pick my cars with it. I espically like the hands free personal calling. Thankfully I haven't had to use the lockout service... its pretty hard anymore with remote keyless entry....

Ditto. I keep the phone minutes paid up so when I need to call my wife I call her on the OnStar phone. A touch of the button on the steering wheel and we are talking... a lot safer than looking for her phone in her purse while she's driving with our kids in the car!!!
I've used it for directions once too....but don't tell anybody
I mainly use it to check the weather to show off to my friends
Here's another amazing fact. I programmed in phone numbers in the call list. My wife asked for the tag and I told her wouldn't work because it was my voice that recorded the tags...WRONG It recognized her voice on my tags!!!
While voice recognition isn't perfect, OnStar's impresses me.

Yeah I like to show it off to friends also... and I use it when I travel to find places like a post office or a resturant.... I agree that hands free is a lot safer... I also like the piece of mind if I was ever in an accident they could call the police if I couldn't....

FbodFather - any stats on how may folks have delayed purchases or gone elsewhere because they couldn't get options they wanted on a particular vehicle without having to take OnStar as part of the package?
I, for one, have been putting off replacement of our SUV for a number of years for lack of an "OnStar Delete". Think both the external antenna and internal antenna cable are ugly, don't want a GPS in the vehicle that's not 100% under my direct control, don't want anybody to be able to do a remote unlock, etc.
I don't have a problem with the folks that like it and want it - but you shouldn't have to take it in order to get other options one would want in a particular vehicle.

Don't know the answer to that, but I know we get many many many calls from owners of other makes of cars and trucks trying to get it installed.
It MAY be in the package...but you can disable it...and remove the antennas.....and GPS doesn't work until you call in and have the service activated.
Remote unlock can't happen until you identify yourself with a unique code.
(by the way.....I'm watching you RIGHT NOW thru the OnStar satellite.......what IS that you're doing!?!?!?!?!?!)
(just kidding.........
Let me ask you this...do you have children or a spouse? I think one of the most impressive stories I've seen with OnStar was when a Cadillac was carjacked......unfortunately there was a small child in a car seat in the back seat....of course, the mother was frantic.......she called OnStar and the car was tracked....child (and Cadillac) rescued. Now....I can't think of a better reason to have OnStar than the peace of mind.....

I (we ) have two kids and I've got to say that the safety considerations do cross my mind. I didn't specifically by the car with OnStar, but it came with OnStar and XM...I now am a huge fan of both services.

I work with a guy who has ONSTAR in his Yukon; he didnt show up for work one day and didnt call, so we were worried about him .... ONSTAR was very nice, they wouldnt give us specific info on his location (privacy and all) but they verified that his truck was OK and that the airbags had not deployed, etc...

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree about OnStar, but the fact remains that GM is losing sales because there's no "OnStar Delete".
There are other ways to address the carjack scenario if marketing has shown that to be a particular concern. Devices have been on the market for many years now that will kill the engine after it's gone anywhere between 100yds and 1/4 mile.

I highly doubt that GM is losing sales due to onstar. Remember the hot button promotion... it was to build brand awareness of Onstar and get peoples butts in a GM vehicle. Heck now 3 or 4 OTHER IMPORT manfactures are equiping their vehicles with Onstar. Talk to a person who has used Onstar for a medical emergency and couldn't reach their cell phone and they swear they will never own anything without it again... You get one year free with most vehicles now... after that you don't have to renew. I'm not 100% but I do believe it is bundled with most high end packages (like a LT for example on a chev) but you can choose to order it on lessor models. If your that uptight about it look into a less equiped model or you don't have to activate it. I know here in the coming years the antenna will get smaller and you'll see body colored antennas for XM and Onstar... the new Cad and Vette use body colored XM antennas that don't stand out as much... and Onstar antenna will be incorporated into the inside rear view mirror if I recall correctly.... I imagine this technology will trickel down to the other lines as they are redesigned.....

I hate it when you are forced to have a technology you don't want. I would prefer an onstar delete option.
When I am in the market for another car, if GM does not offer a delete option, I won't buy from GM.
I have no use for it. The cell phone coverage sucks and it's also analog. I get better reception from my cell phone. Add a headset and voice calling on my cell and it's easier than the damn onstar system. I have also had a ton of problems with my onstar computer and had it replaced (and they wiped out all my saved numbers to boot). When I called onstar to re-set up the new system, they were clueless as to what to do.

Thought that it was 15. I dont have any left when I get the Vehicle. The wife Always uses them up while she is driving it.

Well, they *are* losing sales because as I've said above, they've lost mine.
All the "what ifs" in the world don't change matters any. They could easily be counterpointed by arguments for making drive shaft safety loops, roll cages and 4 point harnesses, and/or armored passenger compartments with bullet-proof glass, and/or run-flats, manditory equipment (some of which I'd favor and some of which I wouldn't).

Actually, all research (and it's extensive) shows that the number of rejectors is minimal....almost non-existent....(there IS you and a few more) However, several forms of research (both brand and OnStar) show that it was a motivator for a lot of plus sales.
We don't want to lose sales, that said, OnStar has been packaged...and perhaps may become standard one day.
Now....I suspect that there are SEO options (Special Equipment Option) that are available to fleet that may allow you to delete it.....will check.

Actually I find the opposite... while Onstar is analog it uses a 1 watt system vs a cell phone which is a lot less(not sure the specific output)... so you actually get better coverage or service...its a lot like the old bag cell phones.. those babies had some power unlike these weak cell phones today. At least I do better here where I live in the back woods. In the next year or so Onstar is going digital....

Legal max on a cell phone 250 miiliwatts, that's 0.250 for our technically challenged friends

Well now this looks like it all comes down to the definition of what the word "IS" is...haven't I heard this before?
I find that Onstar will connect in places my cell phone can't even dream of. That is more likely a function of the Verizon (OnStar provider)network coverage verses Nextell or ATT in my area. Of course the 4x transmission strength helps too!! As any of you that have studied radio transmission know, the transmitter strength and antenna tuning (SWR) is much more important than the reciever setup. Of course phone is bidirectional so both are important. Analog will also work poorly while digital either works or it doesn't. In an emergency situation I'd rather connect on a bad phone call than know that my digital won't bother me with a poor quality call. If I can get to OnStar in an emrgency, they can send help, even if they can't understand every word I'm saying.
