I just heard an EPA official talking about mandatory emission testing here in Michigan shortly. For those that already have to deal with this, what parts are they looking for in the inspection? What internal mods will not jeopardize your ability to pass the test.

Rut roh! This is not good. Well, good for the enviroment, bad for me. No way my SS would pass. If worse comes to worse, I'd hope putting some high flow cats in place of the race pipes would do the trick.

They don't look at internal mods... they usually just do a "sniffer" test... they measure whats coming out at the pipe... Internal mods they really don't care about... per say. But internal mods will cause you headaches for sure. Even with high flow cats they will most likely hook into the OBDII conector and check the cars emissions that way... they will look for codes etc. Even with high flow cats when you have headers you may set a code if the PCM detects a slow light off of the cats... which happens when you move them further downstream... Also they might do a visual inspection to make sure all emission parts are there... I know they used to look at aftermarket parts and see if they had a CARB exemption number on it... More and more areas will start doing emission testing... the EPA is cracking down on cities exceding polution standards... the last time I was in Detroit I was suprised with the amount of smog you could see towards downtown... clean air is a good thing in my book....

What a waste of time and money. Had that back in the early 80's all you had to do was pay the guy for the test and you got a print out saying it was ok. Yeah right didn't even have the testor in the tail pipe of the car being tested. Bunch of crap...
Why doesn't the government just make us drive electric cars...Hell lets just go back to riding horses. Yep I can see it now testing horses for excess gas...

The biggest problem is that they only check cars 10 years back. Then drop the program. Over 10 years is where you need to test.

Here they hook up to the computer on cars from 97 or 98 and up. No sniffer test unless they detect major changes to the car. Lots of guys using header without cats and tricking the O2 sensor to not throw codes passing the tests here...

Same here, 95 or newer get computer check only. Earlier model get sniffer. 20 yrs. or older N/A.

At the moment they are looking at options and won't be implemented until 2006 or 2007 at the earliest. I read that in the Free Press a couple of weeks ago.
