They were'nt writing tickets at the show, they
were explaining to the particpants what they
could be ticketed for on the street. It was
an educational and safety tool. Good idea!

Maybe they were also building a database of potential lawbreakers as well (now we know you have illegal equipment under the hood, so if we stop you and check to see you still have it, you won't get out of paying a hefty fine). Not saying that is the case, but an alternative motive is always possible.

It may very well have been only done as an educational tool for the folks, but somehow these things can have a way of coming back to bite you. Who knows? If they leave it at that, an education, then I agree, it's a good thing. 1984 may have been 20 years ago, but governments have always been behind the times some anyway.

Last summer, there was an incident at a drag track in southern Ontario where the cops set up a road block on the way out of the facility and inspected every vehicle leaving the facility.

Apparently they wrote a lot of tickets including ones for overloaded trailers.

This sure encouraged taking it to the track.....NOT!!! I could not believe the stupidity of the cops, but then there motto is to "harrass and suppress".

BTW, while under car neon is not my thing, I do not understand why it is illiegal. After all, it makes the cars much more visible at night and isn't that the name of the game at night.....to be seen.

Thats a different idea for a show. Last Friday when a couple of us Fbod guys out here were hanging out at the Tim horton Donuts, an unmarked cruiser pulls up to us and says....AHHH...there's the real cars!! [Big Grin] [Cool] . I kid you not either! he was an obvious veteran cop and he was tellin us about his old Cudas and his son's track racing. He also said they were on a blitz out that night busting "tin cans" LOL. He was referring to all the young kids in their Imports with illegal stuff done to their cars. They don't realize how dangerous they make their cars. They were averaging 5 violations per car! [Eek!] He chatted with us for about 20 minutes then left. Pretty cool cop [Smile]

Hey, that was here! [Cool]

Hawkeye hit it right on. The event was put on by local car clubs wanting to keep cruising alive, speed shops put up the prizes and the inspections were voluntary with a guarantee of no tickets being issued.

There's a battle in Winnipeg between the pro and anti-cruising crowds. "Ricers" pretty much shut down our main thoroughfare Sunday nights frustrating residents and regular traffic. Add a few clowns that need to "put on a show" and the police are put in a no-win situation.

IMO opinion it's "kudos" to the groups that put it on.

The cops around Toronto seem to be on a "tear" these days against rice rockets. There is a Canadian Tire oil change facility a few blocks away from me where I take the SS for its changes. With 2 other cars and the SS getting frequent changes every 2500 KM or so (before each event, anyway) I've developed a great relationship with the guys there. One of the kids has a totally riced-out Civic that can best be described as "an abomination" (slammed, spoilered, fart canned, body kit, neoned etc.), but what the hay, he loves it, so it doesn't matter what I think [Wink]
Anyway, the last time I was in he asks if the cops ever stop me and I tell him that I've been pulled over twice in 5 yrs. for not having a front plate, but never been ticketed... so he opens the drawer and pulls out a wad of tickets (must've been 18 or 19 of them) that he has received since the beginning of April! [Eek!] 6 of the tickets were for having too dark a tint on the windows... another 3 or 4 were for improper exhaust and another couple were for excessive noise. He had 1 ticket for improper display of REAR plate(???) and another couple for no front plate!! If I hadn't seen the stack of tickets with my own eyes, I'd never have believed him! He seems like a nice kid, but he's afraid to drive his car now (and will probably be unable to afford to drive it soon anyway!)

Best regardSS,

Elie

Did you happen to notice in that list posted by Elie as to how many of those tickets were subjective in nature. Do you think a light meter was used to check the tint or a sound meter was used to check the exhaust noise.

Don't get me wrong.....I am completely against street racing, and my stance on this subject has caused me personal grief in a local club.

BUT, I am even more opposed to heavy handed, mindless STUPID actions on the part of people who like to throw their weight around......simply becasue they can on the presumption of being guilty just because of the way a car looks or sounds.

Obviously an epidemic! They had to go back to 2001 just to get 5 incidents that MAY have been drag racing. Well I say we hang'em all. That will stop it!

Thats actually what I was talking about when I said it was "scary". I dont have a problem with objective inspection of automotive equipment, but a friend of mine was pulled over in high school (going 20 in a 35) because he had a tach on the hood, and the cop told him that with a racing gauge like that he had to be speeding (dumb cop).
