on the spoiler. Closed the hatch today and it was clanging around. held in by 3 star screws which all seem to be about 1/4" loose. Is there some sort of spacer that came out or is it glued to the top or by some odd chance did all the screws come loose at once.
Someone help me out here. THANKS

There have been reports in the past about the three screws being overtorqued and the plastic breaking. Some had it covered by warranty; no tape anywhere. You can try a washer between the screw and the housing.

There are small cracks around the holes but I think they have been there. So should the screws go all the way in, without a washer. Its kind of hard to get to it with the limited space. Then the goofy star screws really make it tough. I hope I don't end up taking the whole spoiler off. We may have a small project going on at THenry this weekend guys.

Yes, the screws should go all the way without a washer;if the plastic is cracked, the screws probably won't hold torque. You should be able to just use an allen wrench to get the screws in/out. A torx head screw is just like an allen wrench.

When I bought my '99 SS (used) it didn't have any cracks in the third break light. I don't drive my car alot, it just sits in the garage covered up. I did start seeing some small cracks after a year. Last July I went out to the dragstrip before I could get to the staging lanes my third break light fell out. The plastic lens cracked all the away around each screw. I fixed it with some small washers.

Had the same problem on a 2000. The washers will work. Had the light replaced at Tom Henry Chevy. Seems to be a common problem with these lights. Hope to see you Sat. at the show. Bob

after it caught fire and i took it out, the replacement at cheby parts was hairline cracked, at all three holes, just like the one that caught fire, which was the replacement under warranty.
i used a thin rubber grommet on both sides of the screw, so far so good, and no more flames off the spoiler

Just noticed this evening that mine has suffered the same fate. I've not taken it apart yet, but it seems as though the plastic has broken out around two of the screws.
The LED bar had been replaced about 6 months after I bought the car. Maybe the dealers are over tightening them?

I think you can't shut the lid by putting your hand on the spoiler over the light, or at all for that matter. I think it flexes and the cracks get bigger and bigger over time. Now, just have to recondition the wife on this issue. Posts: 161 | From: Houston, Texas | Registered: Aug 2003

I never touch the spoiler - except to wash and Zaino it.
I was thinking more about it last night and wondering if shutting the hatch could be flexing the spoiler enough to be a problem for the lens material. The gromets suggested above should take care of that.

I managed to crack off a small piece of the side of the spoiler by shutting it hard once last winter. Its right on the side by the fender, directly above the back of the wheelwell.
