Well, "soda" is what you use in mix drinks, and "Coke" is a brand. Kami still gets funny looks in Atlanta when she asks for pop's.

Interesting that Josephine and Jackson County (where I'm from) in Southern Oregon is predominantly "soda" and the rest of the state is "pop" according to the survey respondants.
(I'm now in NW Oregon in Washington County.)

A carbonated soft drink is ALWAYS a "coke" in these parts. Tea and lemonade are just that. And if you don't specify unsweetened tea, you get the what many consider around here the ONLY tea, and that's sweet iced tea. It nearly always ticks me off when I go up north and forget that the default tea there is unsweetened tea. Just about everywhere! What up with that?
If you order a coke, and you specifically want coke without having to go through a question and answer period, you need to order a "co-cola". You got to sorta blend the coca and cola parts. If you simply order a coke, they'll most likely respond "Sure, what kind, dear?"
And in New Hampshire and most northeastern areas, you don't get a soda, you get a "so-der". Posts: 577 | From: Aiken, SC | Registered: May 2002

Default tea down here is unsweetened and if they DO offer sweetened, they'll ask you which you want.....so I hadn't run into default SWEET tea before......until a couple summers ago on the way to Florida I unknowingly put about 2-3 packages of Sweet n' Low into ALREADY sweetened tea.......ewwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!! I know how it is, I was raised near Chicago where it's always been pop and down here they just don't understand that Coke is short for CocaCola... silly southerneers Posts: 272 | From: Woodstock, Georgia | Registered: Aug 2003

Sweet & Low is the devil. Sugar is the only thing good enough for my Luzianne iced tea.
Ironic, since I cant stand coke sweetened with sugar (it tastes like pepsi to me). I have to have that good old corn sweetener stuff!

In the Northwest, if you ask for a Sweet tea, they look at you like you have a 3rd eye, and then say..... "there is sugar there on the table!" Never had sweet tea before going to Indy in 2000, and love the stuff. Never figured out why you would make tea, and not put in the sugar while its hot so it actually MELTS and doesn't just sit in the bottom in a big pile.
On the rest of the drinks, we call it a soda, or a pop as either being generic, and Coke is a brand name. Funny how its all different!

Don't get sweet tea. If you want it sweet add your own sugar, just as you would with coffee.
As for Coke, if we ask for a Coke and it's a Pepsi place, they always ask is Pepsi O.K.?

You're a dear. Is there anything from Oregon you'd like? We have lots of green stuff, rain, and hippies (Sorry, we're fresh out of decent men. I got the last one.)
Edit: ...and I'm not bringing you an indecent one, either!
