Looking in the paper yesterday and I see 2 different brands Motorola and Uniden. Any opinion on the 2, Will either work with the other or not? Uniden has a longer range 8 miles but are more expensive.

I have Motorola. They're a few years old, but work pretty well. Can't say on the Uniden, but if they're priced competitively, buy them and give us a review!

I have Motorola and Bell South. The long range ones are great if the other people also have them. Sometimes you can hear them, but they can't hear you.

They both make good units but of the 2 Uniden more than likely the best. I have Motorola and they work ok as well

Something I never thought of. The longer range might be better but if No one can hear you what good are they.

Can you use the Uniden and talk to the Motorola ? And from the Motorola to the Uniden without any clarity issues.

Yes they will talk together, I have uniden ones and I used them on Skyline Cruise and no problems used with other types, still sound clear...even the very cheap sets will comunicate, onlty they wont be as clear and alot of the cheap sets put out a loud "chirp" every time you press the button to talk, this can get annoying, my uniden doesn't chirp and neither do the motorolas that I have used. I have the Bell South one. 5 mile range, 22 channels. I think it worked pretty good at Skyline, and I guess there was a mix of two-way radios there. A few times I heard some static with talking, but I think it was people using low batteries.

I read somewhere a while ago that you may require a licence if the range is greater than 5 miles.

Licensing depends on the frequency band being used, and there are 2 different bands that you generally find in small battery operated walkie talkies.
FRS (Family Radio Service) Most of the radios you buy in the store operate within this band. Range is limited to 5 miles best case scenario (doubt anyone ever sees this), as the FRS radio output is limited by the FCC. FRS operates on 14 channels. You do not need a license for FRS. All manufacturers models work with each other.
GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service). The more expensive and higher power radios will use this band. There are 23 channels in the GMRS band. Lately, there are many radios on the market that have a combination of FRS and GMRS, this creates confusion because they may number channels in a non-standard way. (in other words, channels 1-7 might be FRS and 8-14 might be GMRS, therefore channel 8 on this radio will not work with 8 on an FRS radio). Also, you need a license to legally operate a radio in the GMRS band.
Summary: If you stick with the 14 channel units, you can generally get a decent pair at low cost that should work with everyone else's radios.
