My SS is a 2000 model and I just noticed something today that has me wondering if they are all built this way. Specifically the front seat belts are a bit different between passenger and drivers side. On the drivers side, the buckle that slides on the belt and connects into the the side receptacle by the console is all encased in vinyl or plastic except for the exposed metal end. On the passenger side, it is entirely different. Just a small portion of the buckle has plastic on it. My wife was always complaining about burning her hand on the buckle when trying to click it in place after the car had been sitting in the hot sun. So finally I looked at the belts and now I see why. There is so much exposed metal on the passenger buckle, it's bound to feel very hot to the touch.

What I would like to know is whether or not your buckles are similar.

Dave, just looked at ours (1999) both buckles are the same. They both have a plastic piece that "floats" on the buckle.

I believe the change may have had something to do with being able to hook up a child restraint/seat in the passenger seat.

I just looked at my car (2000 SS) and the buckles are completely different. The passenger side's slides up and down the belt differently and does have a lot more metal on it.

Jeff is correct. It does look like it works with a child seat.

Whoever said you couldn't run away from your problems obviously wasn't driving an SS.
