i tossed this idea around over at camaroz28.com, but i was wondering what you guys would think of it...
i am looking to install an alarm system with the remote start and window roll down thing.. but i would like to also make the vert top switch remote also... for those times when i am just running into mcd's to get some grub and dont wanna leave it wide open or while i am at work, where nobody can get to it but me... i think it would be a neat gadget/gimmick ..
i understand that the latches would be a problem, but like i said it would be for those times where i only want the top up for a little while so that it isnt wide open..so i would leave it unlatched..

basically i was just wondering if you would think that it would be cool looking to see a car start, and have the windows and top come down as the driver is walking towards the car [Cool] .. also if you have any insight into the nitty gritty of doing what i am looking to do...

If it also drove off by itself, then I'd be impressed [Big Grin]

in addition to not latching the top, you would also have to keep the car in neutral.

There are remote start kits available, I'm sure remote express window switches are available as is a similar device for the top - basicallly couple of relays, a remote and a receiver - similar to an alarm set up.

SO, I suspect it's doable - go to a radio/alarm install place and chat them up.

over at the other site, someone said something about jaguar xk's having a motorized latching system, which would work out good in this scenario.. im gonna look into the jag angle a little more..

I've been wanting to figure out how to do the same thing... I'd just leave my top unlatched though, no biggy. Just for when you have to run in someplace or something... If you find out how to do it let me know!

I've been trying to figure out how to make the top switch work like the drivers window express down. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know! I bought another express down control modual to make my passengers window work that way, but I didnt see how to make the convertible top switch function the same way as their wiring is different.

I don't know about everyone else, but my top doesn't come all the way down onto the front frame. I have to pull down on the center handle while latching. This is the problem I see. Maybe my top is just out of alignment?

It takes two of us pulling down on the top to get ours to latch. It's very tight and unless it's really warm out and in the sun for awhile, it's very difficult.

Our VIN was in a range of those listed in a TSB for top replacement, due to a short headliner, but we weren't willing to risk anything on our car getting ruined by someone who didn't know what they were doing, so we'll just have to live with it.

Mine also needs a slight tug before it can be latched. Nothing I can't live with.

Your singature indicates a standard transmission. You would also have to bypass the clutch safety start interlock.

I also need to pull down slightly to latch the top onto the header. Not a big deal for me.

Pulling down on the latch isn't a big deal other than how severely it affects his idea. Most of the pieces are pretty straight-forward. But how do you pull down the top all the way?

Mine comes down into contact with the sealing rubber, but still need a pull on the handle to get the hooks to drop into the sockets.

Your top down idea sounds ok but the remote start with a manual trans is generally not allowed due to the little problem of stating in gear! Someone joked about it driving off, thats no bull. It can happen! I know a body shop man that had a rice burner try to bred his tool box when one of his coworkers hit the wrong button on a remote (not knowing it was the start button and that the car was a manual)! :-(

Connected correctly, the remote start would go through a neutral interlock, which would have to be added to a manual trans, and like with an auto, it'd shut off if the trans was taken out of neutral without the key being put in the lock and turned to ignition on first.
