I just installed a new LS6 405 HP engine in my 99 Camaro SS convertible. Unfortunatly the performance is the same and the Chevy dealership I bought the engine from, as well as two others are lost on what to do. Has anyone ever installed the LS6 and if so, do I need to reprogram the computer or what?? Is something like this covered under warrenty even though an outside agent installed the engine?

The latest issue of Hot Rod has an aritcle about putting the crate LS6 into an Chevelle. They said that although you could order a harness and PCM for that installation, the only PCM that was currently available was for a LS1 and that it required a custom flash for it to work properly w/ the LS6. While they were hooking it to a 4L65E trans, I don't know if that was the only reason (all factory LS6 installations have a 6M).
My guess is YES you need a new / reflashed PCM.

Yes, you need to reflash your pcm. Then have it tuned by someone who knows LS1 edit as well to make it run its best.
To install that engine and not tune it, is like removing a 2bbl 283 engine in older car, replacing it with a 502, but leaving the 2bbl on it. It just will not work correctly or to its best behavior unless tuned properly. Good luck, I am sure you will love it once you are all done Posts: 1443 | From: Lake Oswego, Oregon | Registered: Dec 2001

The 405hp is based on the high flow intake ducts, filters, ect. and the titanium or better exhaust. If you leave the stock Camaro LS1 intake and exhaust on it you'll probably not get the full 405.

In 2002 a statement came out of Chevy that the LS-1 engine is a detuned LS-6 engine they are matched. do not believe the 325HP advertisement . The Horsepower of the LS1 is more. The corporate Bigwigs at Chevy would not let the camaro outshine the Corvette. So the corvette always had a little more.. But not that much more. You probablely would not notice the difference between the two motors.....
