I just hit 15,000 miles on the SS and want to change the tranny fluid/filter and diff fluid. Any suggestions as to what fluid to use (name brand) or is the GM stuff good? All responses are appreciated.

For the trans,Get the filter and gasket from the dealer instead of one of those Fram filters that come with a folded cheap cork gasket. The GM gaskets are far superior and most times reusable. I would use a good Dexron III fluid like Valvoline or Mobil 1. For the differential,get the gasket from the dealer and refill with Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube. I am not sure how good any synthetic trans fluid is or if it is recommended.

For the diff, do I need the GM additive with the Mobil 1?

What diff do you have?

What rear end do you have?

Torsen = Synthetic

Auburn = Mineral based

I am about to change my tranny and rear end fluid with Royal Purple. Can't tell you how it is yet but I have heard good things.

I have the Torsen.

I saw a nice feature on Royal Purple this weekend on Hot Rod TV. That's what got me thinking about changing my stuff.

The Torsen, as mentioned above, requires synthetic oil and I always put the GM additive in with it too. I have used some different brands, right now actually I have 2 quarts of Mobil 1 sitting at home in the garage. Now I just have to get the additive.

As for the tranny, people use such a variety of products here, Redline and Mobil are usually the most popular and I hear a lot of Royal Purple now too. Basically it is like everything else, it isn't necessarily what you use, its just the fact that you do regular maintenance.

PS - there's a discussion about this at LS1.com
