We have been promised the SLP breakdown numbers for 2002 for over a year! The 2001 numbers were readily available! We purchased the cars, now that they are out of production can SLP complete there promise?
Posted by HTWLSS (Member # 117) on 03 October, 2003 03:15 PM:
I don't think it was promised, but more of a courtesy that SLP provided in past years. They are not obligated to give us the info. If we get it, we get it. If not, well, we don't.
SLP has other things to worry about right now. If they are ever able to get #'s out, I'm sure they will. I doubt it's at the top of the priority list at this point, especially since there's no one in Ste. Therese to help audit the numbers.

No, it is the SS by options numbers. SLP has always made them available and it has become part of the SS lore. SLP has known the numbers since they accepted the order for the last car! They OWE it to their customers to provide these numbers. You might have one of only a couple 02 SSs made and you need that information. It shows a complete disregard for SLP customers!
I ordered a car that I thought would be fairly rare and now I would like to know if I was right!!

SLP doesn't really owe anyone anything... you got everything you paid for.
Having one of a few red t-top SSs with an M6, cloth and SS key fosb doesn't make the car worth more than any other SS, having a car that is in great shape and is desireable makes it worth more.
You sound like a Vette owner that is pissed off because the "lowly SS and Firehawk owners" got build numbers and they didn't.
Just my $.02US/$.03CN

You may have ordered an uncommon combination of options, but it's not necessarily "rare".
Considering only a handful (or less...the breakdowns don't give specific combinations) were made in '99, is a Navy Blue Convertible with white top and white interior "rare", or just "different"?

I was going to reply to this with "oh jeez, here we go again" but it looks like several beat me to it. This isn't EXACTLY like the build number thread, because nobody was outright demanding that SLP do something on that one.
I've said this before, and I'll say it again, the only rare car is the car you want and don't have. Rarity is in the mind of the beholder. As far as strictly numbers, a Pacer X is rare, compared to Camaro SS. But that doesn't make it more valuable.
I didn't buy my car and option it the way I wanted because I know my option list would be a bit outside the norm (hard-top). I ordered it because it fit MY wants to my satisfaction. No snot-nosed kid from down the street is going to buy my low-mile car 25 years from now, because I'm going to wring the good out of it for my own pleasure. My luck I'd die hardly ever driving the car and have the widow sell it for dirt.
You can't demand anyone give you a free tidbit if you have no vested interest in it. It's not like you paid for a birth certificate and never got it. While it would be very cool if SLP does finish the breakdown, it's not the end of the world if they don't. With the '69 Hurst/Oldses, it was nearly 30 years before any of the conversion documentation was found, and only 550 (a little over half) verified VINs were discovered even then.
It's probably in SLP's historical files, so given time to sort things out, they'll more than likely get to it sometime. But I wouldn't hold them to a deadline.
If the breakdown is that important to you, then volunteer your services to help assemble the list, if SLP will allow it. I'm sure they would if they had the time.

Well.. my .02 personally.
Although I really enjoy being a part of SSOA... I purchased my membership mainly based on getting the build numbers for my car. The antenna flag, decals, and other cool stuff was just a "side dish" to what I really wanted. Although they are really cool items its not what I sent my $40 out for, personally.
I was really dissapointed when I got my packet and it didnt include the one thing I wanted, the build numbers.
Im not trying to disrespect anyone here... I TOTALLY understand that ish happens and SLP is in the middle of something right now that may take some time. Thing is if those types of things are being delayed right now it would be nice if the description of a SSOA members packet was fixed for the time being, I kinda feel mislead after finding out there are other people that have been waiting for the same thing for a lot longer. If I had known beforehand that these things were being delayed I would have held off until later to send my $40 out.
Either way its cool.. I dont mind waiting to get the numbers. That is, of course, it happens within the next couple months. If that point comes I may be half tempted to send the stickers and goodies back and request a refund of my $40.
Like I said, and Id like to reiterate, Im not angry at anyone.. not trying to disrespect anyone.. but thats how I feel. Posted by DanA_F99_1977 (Member # 118) on 04 October, 2003 08:24 AM:
$40.00 for a number? You could get it for free if you want (still takes time it seems lately).
I felt as though the $40.00 was to support this site, organizing the events we have and to support the SSOA web page. (What ever happened to that?).
Oh, I like the flag too. It's great for finding each other at events!

Some of the recent posts suggest SLP is now asking a minumum purchase of $50 for those numbers from them. So $40 to me is worth it.

Hmmmm...this thread is remarkably similar to the knee jerk reactions that were so typical of the SLP board. Complete with witty, holier than thou, SLP mods. Cute!
I have spent plenty of money with SLP having bought 3 SSs in the past 4 years! SLP seems to have adopted the attitude that "we made our money on you, now beat it". SLP has a duty to it's CUSTOMERS to supply us with the numbers only they have!
You guys who are saying it doesn't matter will change your tunes in about ten years. Twenty years from now the numbers will be invaluable!
As for the corvette comment I have no idea what that means but yes, I do have a Z06 and a ZL1 for that matter but a 1LE camaro is just as much fun to drive to me(as the Z06) and more rare! I'd like to know how rare.

Sparks - SLP doesn't owe you a thing! You have only two posts on this board and both are whining about the build number.Where in your purchase agreement with GM or SLP does it say anything about supplying you with a build number? It doesn't. If you really think that that number will make your car worth more money in 20 years, most of us on this board have bridges and property that we would like you to buy. I suggest you go to CAD day and complain personally to Scott Settlemire of Chevrolet and Ed Hamburger that you were cheated - and bring your contract.

Ok, to be fair, we realize everyone has their opinion and they have a right to think the way they do. So as far as the quote above, can you answer "why SLP OWES us?" Their obligation ended when they put on the decals and SLP options and loaded the car back on the truck. They said they were working on it a while back, so I'm sure they'll get around to finishing it at some point. I would agree if your thoughts were that it would be nice if they would tell us they simply won't do it or if it is still on the back burner.
quote:You might have one of only a couple 02 SSs made and you need that information.
Again, the question is raised, "why do you feel we NEED it?"
quote:I ordered a car that I thought would be fairly rare and now I would like to know if I was right!!
Fair enough, but I think that you're confusing rare-optioned with a rare car. The 02 SS is far from rare. But why do you care if it's rare or not? The only reason anyone would really care is if their ego needed it or if they wanted to sell it and maximize their profit, to which neither of those things apply to me. Maybe that's why I can't relate. I only buy stuff if I want it and plan on keeping it. Rarity doesn't play a factor in my purchases.
And, as for anyone paying $40 for a ~lifetime~ membership to the SSOA, why worry that you don't get your number in a month or two?.... Posted by Sparks (Member # 2028) on 04 October, 2003 01:17 PM:
You boys need to get your noses out of the Hamburger butt and get a clue. SLP could and should have made these numbers available long ago!
Jefffy - your remarks are typical of SLP and it's attitude. And of course they are not legally obligated to release those numbers. Morally, maybe.
Get it through your heads guys; SLP is through with you. They have made their money on you and you are of no further use.
As far as rarity goes how many were built means absolutely nothing. The 69 camaro was made by the tens of thousands. The rare ones are the valuable ones. Priced a 69 ZL1 lately?? 69 SS? Z28?
And what the hell does Settlemire have to do with this? This is a SLP issue.
Lemme know about the bridges. I've always wanted my very own.

I know I know... I am really glad I joined SSOA. I really like the "brotherhood" of SS owners in general, I get thumbs up from other SS owners all the time. Being a part of SSOA further enhances that "brotherhood." Im not sure if that makes sense to anyone but it does to me.
The only thing I ask is that if something is going to be delayed, such as those build numbers, then it would only be fair that it be stated somewhere on the page that explains the contents of the membership packet. Thats all.
I know some people here are upset that SLP is now witholding these numbers from the general public, at least witholding them until you pay them $50. I dont believe SLP owes anyone anything just cause we bought these cars. HOWEVER... some people, such as the majority of us here, bought these cars knowing we were somehow tied into a great company and that the cars with the SLP options are the "Top Dogs." Now... with that in mind you would expect a reputable company to provide excellent customer service... which they have in the past. We all understand their current status with employees and that nobody is in business for free, hence "selling" the build numbers now. So I dont blame them for selling the numbers now but if you ask me I think its just wrong, and thats just my opinion.
Personally I want these numbers cause I would like to dress up my car to show it, SLP engine plaque, nice car plaque with stand for shows, etc...
My family has owned a few rare Chevrolets.. ex 69 DZ 302 Camaro and a 71 LS5 454 SS Elky to name just a couple. My uncles that had these cars had every build number, casting number, paint codes, etc.. all on one sheet. Id like to do the same.
Once again.. Im not mad at anyone that organizes the packets.. I know how internet conversations can come off a bit strong and left open to interpretation. Ill patiently wait for my numbers as long as I know for sure they are coming and wont take a year to get. Posted by JeffY (Member # 120) on 04 October, 2003 02:28 PM:

What do you mean - typical of SLP. I don't work for them. And its not an SLP issue-the SS belongs to GM and Settlemire is their represenattive. And what do you mean morally obligated? What the hell makes you think that? Did you only join this board to complain? About a stinking number. Never drive your car again until that number is known!! Posted by Sparks (Member # 2028) on 04 October, 2003 05:40 PM:
SLP made the mods and I have to believe was sophisticated enough to keep up with what they were doing. Maybe GM does have the numbers, I'll check.
I am keeping my 02, Blk, A4, 1LE, leather, etc. for someone who won't be able to drive it for 15 years or so if ever. I'd simply like to be able to say, "There are -- SSs that were made just like yours." That's all I'm asking.
One more point. For the millionth time we've all heard......cars don't make good investments. Some do some don't. I can't see in to the future or I would have put away a couple ZL1s in 1970. (And kept a 66 Shelby Mustang with a factory Paxton supercharger, damn-it!) I do think, however, that the LS1 series of SSs is one of the most underated muscle cars of all time. The combination of the hood and the spoiler just add the finishing touches to a beautiful car. Look closely at the lines sometime (muscular in my opinion). The catfish nose takes a little getting used to but from other angles and especially the rear, few cars look better to me.

These numbers contain for example how many red cars had Auburns, along with complete breakdown like the 01's had! Sorry this thread turned into a battle and disagreement from many of us. The SSOA and Jeff has been trying there best to keep everyone happy! Does anyone else have the time like Teri to devote to help out SS owners? I hesitate to post in this thread since it seems it's becoming more of a political debate than a discussion on the "back porch". I guess at some point in time "the numbers" will appear. YES, I'd like to see them too (as a courtesy to the customers), ...but if it doesn't happen, ...Oh well that's the way it goes. It's not like SLP is obligated to provide them. As for the SSOA, ...how did they get pulled into this? They aren't involved with these numbers, ...unless I completely missed something I don't think they were ever obligated to supply them. There may be a statement in the packet that indicates they will provide whatever information THEY have, but if they don't have it, ...surely they can not be expected to provide it. As for Scott Settlemire, ...Scott DID provide Chevrolet production numbers for the various model years (inlcuding 2002). These did not include 2nd sticker content which I believe would come from SLP if/when provided (This I know is the piece most are interested in).
Yes it would be nice to get the production numbers, but SLP doesn't owe us anything. I'm also very happy to be a member of the SSOA, ...the many friends I've made are surely worth more than 40 bucks Lastly, ...I hope to enjoy the SS parked in my garage for many years to come and look forward to meeting more members of the SSOA, ...some who I'll see at SLP's customer appreciation day this weekend...

Noboby is dragging anybody into anything. It is simply a matter of some of us who plan to keep our SSs wanting to know how many just like ours were made. This info was ALWAYS made available to us in the past. These numbers will become more valuble in the coming years and probably more difficult to get if we don't get them soon.
Before Dave closed the SLP board he said the numbers would be forthcoming. I think he will eventually post them.

Now then...I must go hunt the Janitor down and let HER do her thing Posted by Avengeance Z4C (Member # 2053) on 06 October, 2003 10:43 AM:

one here I was told that mine is one of the 9 sold in Switzerland. Why? Almost no one is interested to buy a barely usable (too big, no room, small trunk) high costing (insurance, gas...)car in the area.
BTW: metall + fiber + petrol + human genius = 1 car
Enjoy it, use it and keep the picture to show to your grandchildren and illustrate when you were "though" .

The 35th Anniversary registry is stil in development. After it's in place, that additional letter will be produced.
In the meantime, contact Hookerf14 with your 35th info. He's our resident SSOA member who is working on that registry.

This thread has gone on way too long.
Bottom line, no one associated with this message board has control as to when/if SLP provides detailed build information for the 2002 model year.
