Took the dogs for their walk last night - everything was fine. At 9:30 I noticed Dakota,
the male, was standing and shaking with a
pained expression. I called Mary in to look at
him. She felt his abdomen and thought he had
bloat - the stomach twists and closes completely.
No way for any gasses etc to escape and they
bloat.

We rushed to the emergency animal clinic. The
Vet on duty confirmed with xrays that he had
bloat. We were given 3 choices. 1) do nothing
and he will die painfully in about an hour.
2) Put him down 3) Try surgery, expensive but
the success rate if caught soon enough is
in the 65%-80% range.

The surgery began and lasted about 3 1/2 hours.
We went home at 1:30 a.m. The surgery went as
expected and we expected full recovery. At
3:30 a.m. the vet called, Dakota went into
cardiac arrest and is now gone.

Sleep well good friend. May your soul be bound
in everlasting peace. You were loyal to a fault,
and will be sorely missed.

Oh, Brian....I am so, so sorry to hear this news. I could tell from what you have written about them just how much you and your family love these dogs, and I know it is devastating to lose one. Rest assured, he knows he was loved very much and that you did your very best to take good care of him.

And thank you, Greg, for the beautiful pictures of this magnificent animal....I know Brian appreciates them, as do we.

Peace be with you and your family.

[Frown] Sorry to hear of your loss. Just remember, he'll be waiting for you on the other side of the bridge.

The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Brian,

So sorry for your loss. It gave me chills because a few years back my sister lost her german shepherd, Max, to the EXACT same thing. He was even the same age. It is a terrible thing to lose a loved one in the family. Dakota was a gorgeous animal and it sounds like you gave him a great home.

My thoughts are with you.

Bryan and I are so sorry for your loss. We lost one of our pugs, Marla, when I was 8 months pregnant. The only thing that got me over it was the birth of our son.
Its so hard to lose a pet, but I cant imagine life without them!
