you have my utmost sympathy.
I had a female St. Bernard, Lulu, die from bloat. She was 12 years old and the vet put her chances of recovery at less than 25% so I had to make the difficult decision to have her put down. She was in terrible pain, a horrible thing to happen to a dog.

Sorry to hear of your loss. I can relate closely with the loss of our dog of 14 years a few months ago. It was hard, I honestly had no clue it would affect me like it did. It was certainly like I lost a little sister or something. The part that made it so painful was that in was in such a short period of time. Our dog was old, and she was starting to show her age with her walking/etc. We knew she had arthritis, we even gave her baby tylenol to help relieve that pain. I came home from work like any normal day, to find my family to be a little "quite".....moreso that normal. Come to find out our dog had been pretty still most of the day, we knew she was in pain. We took her to the vet, and did what was best for her. We had to put her down. I for one couldnt stand to see her in pain, neither could my family. Hell I did all I could to fight back a tear typing that up, but I couldnt stop it.
You were doing was the best for your dog, just know that. Also know that there wasnt any pain, so he didnt suffer when his time came. I posted the loss of my family's dog on 1 or 2 boards, only ones that I knew would get replies from people that had been in my shoes. It helped out alot, I got the best advice of all, which helped me through the loss: Dont remember his passing, remember all the good times you had with him. I read that everyday for the next few weeks.........it works.
We recently got another dog.....same specie, Teacup Poodle. Over the past few months, it has been great. We even see alot of the same traits with the new puppy. All of us reflect back to how our last poodle acted, etc. Heck, even sometimes we call the puppy by our last dogs name.
Speaking of the devil.....here is "Jojo".....
RIP Tasha....
I wish the best for you and your family. Time helped for sure, but dont forget those memories.

I'm also very sorry to hear of your loss Brian. There's a very special bond that seems to happen with dogs, and it's something to always be treasured. Time will help the hurt, but he'll always be with you in some way. And that's good.

Hawkeye as a dog owner myself, I am so sorry for your loss. But you did everything you could to save your beloved Dakota.
Please take the time to read this poem. I hope it helps in someway.
The Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
