It's been in the upper 90's here for quite awhile and at that temperature my SS generally runs around 210 degrees with the A/C on. It doesn't seem to vary much at speed or idle. Has that been your experience also?

me too. i find that all fbods after 98 have the same thermo reading. i don't think it's very accurate. my husband put a 160 thermo in his 2000 SS and it still reads 210, though the thermometer we put in the air vents reads 160. i was told that after 98 even if you change the thermo, the only way the temp gauge will read correctly is if you upgrade the radiator too?? go figure.

With the 160 stat and the fans on at 182 it stays pretty cool. Just the way I like it!

it read 190 from the factory, I upgraded to a 160 deg. thermostat, and SLP's high-capacity radiator and it still reads 190.

I read in another post that it was computer controlled and it always goes to the same spot. Not like older cars where the sending unit gave you an accurate read constantly.

After 98 it's just a guage that shows "normal" range. It can't be used to judge the actual temperature. 1998 and prior show the actual temperatures.

He's right on!!! I had the dealer check my gauge, the tech swore to me it was working, so I had him put a tech II diagnostic machine on my car, the temp read 185º not the 210º on the guage. He shrugged his shoulders and said it was working to specifications, just that it wasn't really a gauge it was more of an IDIOT light. DOH

With the LT1 and a 160 stat and manual fan control, it never went above the 180 mark. With the 10th I have not a clue what it runs at with the 160 stat and lowered fan setting.

The story I heard is the engineers got tired of hearing customer complaints that the temperature kept going up and down so they "fixed" it by having the computer keep the gauge at the same point.

Its in the computer programming, since the computer sends the data via the wiring harness to the cluster. I changed out EVERYTHING in our 98 to 2000 stuff, including the wiring harness and dash/cluster assy, and now it reads 205-210 all the time. Prior to that it read actual temps (which I happened to like). I think I had to change the sensor from the 2000 engine into the 98 engine because (if memory serves me) the connector is different.

Can it just be changed with LS1 edit? I'll check it out!
